Calling this character Silverstreak drives me insane!(pet peeve?) Then saying it's Diaclone but never mentioning that it was blue on the official Hasbro Blustreak G1 box makes it even worse. This figure is Bluestreak if you go by the official Hasbro G1 box & instruction booklet. Why can't this figure be acknowledged as the proper G1 Bluestreak? Why does everybody insist on calling him anything but Bluestreak? So now fans are calling the silver robot blue & the blue robot Silver. There are 3 American Hasbro Bluestreaks, the all silver G1 toy, the silver & black from the cartoon & the blue from the G1 box & instruction booklet. All 3 are official American Hasbro product & all 3 are named BLUESTREAK.

Transformers fans are beyond annoying with their cartoon accuracy BS. Stop trying to erase anything & everything that didn't happen in the godawful cartoon. G1 is G1 and that includes all of it, not only the cartoon. :BANG_HEAD:

Where the hell did the name "Silverstreak" even come from? :???:

The exact same place Bluestreak's name came from: official Hasbro product. It's not a "cartoon accuracy bs" thing, it's the fact that the direct from Hasbro word-of-god is that that's his name. Everyone pointed this out to you already in the Legacy thread.

They should follow the lead of the Generations Selects release Red Swoop, and append the color modifier to the name. So cartoon colors Bluestreak is Bluestreak, and toy colors Bluestreak is Silver Bluestreak, and blue toy Bluestreak is Blue Bluestreak, and Diaclone toy Bluestreak is Silver Silverstreak, and Diaclone blue toy is Blue Silverstreak, and blue silver silver blue Bluestreak Silverstreak Silverstreak Bluestreak Blue Silver Streak Streak Silver Blue Blue Silver Silver Silver Silver Streak Streak Streak Streak Streak Streak Streak Streak Streak Streak

If we get one with just the robot skeleton and no car parts, can we call him Streaker?

Your right, G1 is also the toys. What colour was the Bluestreak toy?

Webster Online Discionary wrote:blue streak noun

Definition of blue streak
1: something that moves very fast
2: a constant stream of words

"talked a blue streak"

The name refers to his personality, not his physical color.

"Silverstreak" was the replacement name for Bluestreak back in the 2000's, when the (variant) trademark was owned by a different company, and was thus out of Hasbro's reach. It was based on the all-silver coloring the character had for his toys at the time; first the all-silver reissue, then the all-silver Alternator. It stuck around until around 2010 when Hasbro was able to reclaim the "Bluestreak" trademark. Even so, Hasbro has a habit reviving names as alternatives, which is what happened here.

In a nutshell, a trademark signifies temporary legal ownership of that name for marketing purposes, emphasis on temporary. If a name falls in disuse, the legal ownership expires and any company can claim the name. TONS of G1 names fell victim to that during the Beast Wars, so a lot of replacements had to be created. What doesn't help is that around the 2000's the laws for copyright, trademarks and licensing were made more strict.

Here's a fun fact: Milton Bradley had a Red Tracks, a red-foot Optimus Prime, and had Jetfire be the Autobot Leader.

Here's another fun fact: Juniorpress, the Dutch publication that translated the original Marvel Comics series, had Optimus Prime be called Jetfire. (It is mentioned in the above link.) The translation will say that name change was eventually corrected.

All I can say is that situations like this are far more interesting to me because I spent nearly a decade following the Japanese portion of the G1 continuity. Among those name changes the ones that do not make any real sense are ones where Bumblebee was renamed Bumble. Cliffjumper being renamed Cliff makes some sense, as does Bluestreak being renamed Streak. But Bumble? The definition does not fit the character.

In all cases, as Jelze has pointed out, name changes like that do happen. Because even the Commemorative reissue of Hot Rod has him be called "Rodimus Major" (instead of Hot Rodimus).
