Why do people like Grimlock so much?

I mean the whole premise of a robot turning into a dinosaur is rather silly, seeing they are supposed to be "robots in disguise". Disguised as what exactly? A robot dinosaur?
And while we're at it, why on earth do the Cybertron modes of the transformers have cockpits for little humans to sit inside. Who are the alt modes supposed to fool anyway?
In Episode 1, it showed Soundwave turning from what looked like a parking meter or public telephone booth into Soundwave. That sorta makes sense in terms of he's "in diguise", though one would question the whole idea of the use of a parking meter/telephone booth on Cybertron anyway. But the rest of the alt forms just don't make sense - what are they supposed to be disguised as, and who are they supposed to fool?
And since they all can fly, what the heck would be the benefit of turning into a car?
Questions for the Transformer Guru out there...

Well if he meant the toy Grimlock I guess the boot fits.
Well the thing is... I don't like Grimlock very much...
People tend to because he was a big hit in G1. Pfft G1...

well, in my case it's just because Grimlock was cool toy I happened to have as a kid

And his stupidity was also hilarious. And his speech pattern
The **** is not cool, though.

Well, Transformers is a kids show, and most kids like dinosaurs, some like them almost as much as giant robots. Thus having a giant robot that turned into a dinosaur was like the best thing ever. Add to that the mystic of T-Rex, and the fact that Grimlock was the leader, and you have an instant hit.
Besides: "Him Grimlock, badass!"

I actually like the comic version of Grimlock, where he is a intelligent if stubborn and defiant warrior. In my opinion, it gives him more depth than being big, strong, and stupid.

I know what you mean, it's just that the stupid-Grimlock was the first one I was introduced (actually, it was via the comics also, Budiansky's Grimlock was quite an idiot too.) So I kinda "met" the **** only few years ago when I got back into this stuff. By then, it was burned into my brains that "Grimlock = stupid", soo...that's where my point of wiev comes from

On Cybetron their Alt modes were used in their work. If you were a truck, you carried goods. If you were a jet, you were part of the air force.
And there was no point of being in disguise on Earth. The humans and bots often teamed together to fight the cons.
Grimlock liked power, and what's more powerful than the king of the dinosaurs?
And I believe Soundwave transformed into a street light/ statue thingy on Cybertron. Kinda the most pointless alt mode ever.

Unless your job is a spy. Nothing better for a spy to turn into than something inconspicuous.
Though i don't think All of their alt modes had anything to do with work. Jazz and BB's Cybertron mode didn't seem to be of much use for anything in particular. I think in some cases much of it was simply transportation. Kind of like having your car permanently attached to your body.
As to why turn into a car if you could fly. For one the Autobots aren't really supposed to be able to fly. That was a bit of a mistake in MTMTE. After that none of them ever flew again. And even when the Autobots could fly they were very slow. It was actually faster just to drive in most cases.

Zombie thread moment here but,
Most early Transformers were originally released as Takara Diaclone and they had pilots.

The G1 cartoon was full of inconsistencies and holes in the plot you could drive a bus through for the simple fact it was a children’s cartoon designed to sell toys, the story/characters/continuity were rather secondary to that main focus.
As for Grimlock he was popular cos he was badass and he transformed into a T-rex, kids love dinosaurs especially 80s kids and back then king of all the Dinosaurs was the T-rex. Also for the more grown up or cerebral fan Furmans take on the Grimlock character both in G1 Marvel and all later comic books has been fricking awesome.

Grimlock was my favorite as a kid. Hell, the Dino-Bots in general were my favorites. And ever since then it seems like he is the "badass" of the Autobot faction, so he continues to be one of my favorites.

it may not make sense, but
dinosaurs are very popular.
T-rex easily the most popular dinosaur of all.

I thought the original slogan was "More Than Meets the Eye". I believe that's what was on the packaging. In one of the G1 episodes, they said that they invented transforming as a tactical advantage, not for disguise. And I agree with the people that said kids like Dinosaurs, and T-Rex is the most badass one, thus people liked Grimlock.
Mass shifting is very strange in G1. For example, Megatron fits inside Thrust in the Kremzeek episode and Galvatron fits inside Cyclonus in the movie. So, according to those physics, those cockpits can seat other Transformers.
I thought Soundwave was a lamp post on Cybertron.
I don't think the car Transformers can fly without jet-packs, except Tracks.

I would have to say it is because most kids loved dinosaurs, and grimlock was t-rex king of all dinosaurs enuff said.

Grimlock is to Transformers what Elvis was to rock and roll. He's the king (baby).
I remember loving him way back to his G1 profile card. He's the strongest Autobot next to Prime, that in itself is awesome. And, stupid as he is, or more acurately how stupid he's perceived to be, he's actually pretty danged smart. He leaves his speech processor that way so that people think he's stupid and plodding, then the "stupid robot" pops up, transforms, and bites your head off. He's also a good leader, he cares for his troops, sacrafices for them, and has a keen strategic mind. He's the best warrior the Autobots have, a powerhouse, and a natural leader. The only reason he doesn't lead the Autobots himself is pretty much because he doesn't want to-at least that's what I remember. And how freaking cool is that. He's also about as close to being a Decepticon as an Autobot can get, and yet he's not a Decepticon, because he hates them even more. He's mean, he's ugly, and he wants to munch metal. Back where I come from, that's how we spell badass. As for the T-Rex alt mode and there being a lack of the "disguise" factor, Grimlock doesn't have time for any 'more than meets the eye' bullshit. He's the biggest, the strongest, and the meanest. Cars? Jets? They don't have teeth to eat your opponents with. I personally can see why he chose it, and would likely choose it myself.
Well, maybe a Brontosaur...
