Does anyone know the history of the rub symbols

I heard that it was way prove what transformers were really and which ones were ko or pirated copys. So I wonder if anyone can confirm this or if it is another urban legend.

It's true to my beliefs, seeing as knock-offs never have them. They started in the late 80's and ended when Beast Wars went into Transmetal II generation. I believe they were brought back for the Classics Line though.

It wasn't really to differenciate against knock-offs per se. It was intended to separate the real Transformers from all the other imitators that started popping up due to their popularity such as GoBots and others.
