Beast Machines --- why all the hate?

Of the three or four Beast Machines toys I've owned in my short lifetime, I must say that each one left me quite impressed. Optimus Primal (deluxe from the first wave) was horribly inaccurate, but it was still awesome. It looked great and could pull off some cool poses. I had a repaint of deluxe Jetstorm as Skywarp from Universe, and it was also great in the same vein. Scavenger was a fun little basic toy, as Longhorn. Of course, it had its crappy examples (Snarl comes to mind, as does SUPREME Cheetor). However, what transformers line doesn't? I know there are still a few BM figures I wouldn't mind owning, namely Rattrap, Battle Unicron, and Nightviper.

What I'm asking though, is why all the hate? Sure they weren't the least bit show accurate, but aside from that, why was it so bad?

I think people were just disappointed - and I personally would love to grab some Beast Machines stuff, although it was the line that put me off of collecting Transformers until now. Why? Mega Cheetor. What a waste of plastic.

Besides that I'm disappointed I didn't get Optimus Primal, Megatron, or Tankor and Jetstorm.

I don't know why all the hate myself. I loved the show and the toy line. Yeah the toys were inaccurate, but they were cool none the less. Well except Supreme Cheetor, it's one of the few TFs I regret buying.

I dug the show as well. Even as a G1 fan it was the show that really got me back into TFs. I love Jetstorm and Tankor, both are very fun toys with nice paint apps and chrome touches.

Can't say that I understabd the hate. I thought the show was very cool. I admit that I didn't dig the toys at all but the show was very entertaining for me.

yeah, the toys did suck, but the show was "deep" and entertaining. I like the way they managed to wrap up the whole series since it was a direct continuation from beast Wars.

Maybe you're talking about Machine Wars? Everyone hates that series.

I like Beast Machines. Here is one of my prized TF that used a beast machines mold. Sorry for the crappy pic- hes stuck in a box forever.

Supreme Cheetor (the TF laughing stock)

numerous bad character designs

No accurate Primal (even Air Attack is WAY out of scale..)

Tankor

Anything else?

So you have issues with pretty much every line of Transformers then? :D

okay so everyline has scale discrepancies but these were irreconcilable. ratrap was bigger than megatron and the largest non supreme maximal was the bat and the smallest, silverbolt - complete opposites of their portail on the show.

For me, it wasn't the toys that I disliked so much as the show. It took everything that was good about Beast Wars and completely destroyed it. All of the great characters and characterizations in Beast Wars were totally lost and it just felt dumbed down, which was a direct result of it being picked up by a network whereas Beast Wars was syndicated.

I think people don't like it for interjecting religion into Transformers, though it was more philosophy than religion. That and the whole organic Cybertron really seems to rub people the wrong way.

I actually like the show. Own the DVD boxset and all the show character toys with the exception of Eddie Furlong as Bat-Brat. I too wish the toys were better but hey, I had to get a Savage/Noble sent from Scotland. Damn thing cost me $50 and it's still one of my favorites.

I loved BW/BM. They owned so much. I fyou like Deluxe Primal, you should get Blast Punch Primal. He is a LOT more accurate and can pull off some cool ****.

I mostly just collected the vehicrons, most of the maximals just didn't interest me as much as the BW ones.
and I kinda wish Megatron was a lerger scale, he kind of needs to look up to see rattrap, they should have made him alot bigger

I personally think the Beast Machines lines is one of the best; however, it was marketing was handled horribly to the point that a lot of fans lost interest, myself included.

As for the television show, I liked it, but I still can't rationalize certain character developments like Rhinox becoming "evil" and Megatron becoming a Nazi.

Also, Benseon Yee at bwtf.com actually has an interesting article on this subject.

The chars were out of character. Though less that, more that they weren't given the proper evolution to turn into what they were(especially Primal and Megs), we were just expected to lap it up. And some characters(mainly Blackarachnia) were outright less interesting. Some of the designs were also totally redone(as opposed to Rattrap who was a more sensible evolution, only without legs which was annoying), which I'm never really a fan of, I think characters should always be kept recognisable(not a fan of the Transmetal Primals either, as you can imagine, they kind of ruined his potentially iconic status as a character).

Apart from that, it's a fantastic show.
