How does one go about custom painting transformers?

Hi.
This be my first post.
If memory serves me correctly....

ANYWAY.
Looking at some of these superb custom repaints of the movie transformer lines (notably leader class megz and prime) really does inspire me to give it a shot as well.
Which brings me to a problem- not knowing how to. :-x

I've had experience in painting scale aircraft and starship models, but never anything with moving parts before.
Does one dis-assemble the figure first? Or prime the whole thing first and just avoid the joints?

I'd really appreciate some help/advice so I can start planning on how to tackle a few customs of my own.

Some step-by-steps wouldn't hurt either. :)

Thanks
Richard
