Are Beastformers a type of Transformer?

They were in Japan, they even featured in one of the Headmasters episodes.
No idea about outside Japan.

its a yes and no answer.
Yes - they had several appearances in the Headmasters series.
No - despite being in several Headmasters episodes, they were a seperate line all together. They had their own comics both in the east and in the west. I did read they had plans for a western cartoon show ala Transformers, but it was scrapped.

In Japan they were, but here in the US they they were released as Battle Beasts. The sticker thing on their chests were a rub sign, but instead of Autobot or Decepticon insignia that they had in Japan, they were fire, water, and wood. When you played, it would be like a game of rock, paper, scissors. Fire beat wood, wood beat water, and water beat fire. The line was also totally unconnected to Transformers here in the US.

Yep, and they were thrown into the latest Devil's Due TF/GI Joe crossover as a sort of homage to this loose connection.

Yep, and they were thrown into the latest Devil's Due TF/GI Joe crossover as a sort of homage to this loose connection.
Oh yeah, and they were also in Dreamwave's Transformers Summer Special a couple of years back. So I guess they are a part of US continuity in a homage kind of way.
