That is actually one of the real early Microman/Micromasters molds and colors. In the transformers guide Simon Furman the caption for the character says:

"Part of the original Takara Microman/Micromasters line, the Megatron toy mold first appeared in 1980, released in a black version. Modeled on the Walther P-38 gun, this early version was followed by a silver/gray variation (later revived as the E-Hobby Megaplex redeco/reissue of Megatron), and then a special (still pre-G1) U.N.C.L.E. edition, with various attachements (silencer, stock extension, ect.) This latter version would become the basis of the TRANSFORMERS Megatron."

here it is:

http://mykooltoyz.tripod.com/blackmegatron.html

with info on its initial availability.

its a really nice version looks more 'real' than the grey version as the black plastic looks, well, less like plastic and the gunmetal chrome looks richer. the black microman version didnt have chrome, the 'metal' sections were done in black plastic/paint, the handle was brown. also the microman versions had blue interiors on the legs/arms instead of TF red.

edit:the original microman versions were either all grey plastic (like the megaplex toy) or the brown black non metallic version, both had blue leg/arm inners. The later UNCLE version with all theextra bits and pieces (the one TF megs is based on) had the same colours as megatron. so if im not mistaken there are 4 colour vesions of 'megs': all grey, black and brown, black and silver (classic megs) and gunmetal/brown (ie the special 16S one from the auction)

I think movie Jazz is responsible for painting him black. He should be worth a mint now, him being dead and all.

Nope, Megaplex was grey, not black. This one is a companion piece to the 16-S reissue of Megatron, Megaplex was the companion piece for the TFC Megatron released a few years later.
