I've been thinking (smell the smoke?).

We call the non robot form of a Transformer its alternate or alt mode but is this right? Take the Binaltechs for example, the primary mode is surely the car mode as the robot mode is derived from the car.

Of course this isn't always true. Energon Shockblast we clearly designed with robot mode foremost, that weird tank thing is just something made from the robot parts.

Just a though.

The way I look at its its their alternate mode because their robot mode is their true form. The alternate mode is almost always a form of disguise, transport, weaponry or protection. Whatever alternate mode a Transformer chooses it will almost always have a robot mode the only exception I can think of off the top of my head is Beast Machines Savage/Noble who had too beast modes and not real robot mode, but there was a very good reason for that.

Like the cassettes that turned into a jet.

Although they could combine to make a robot so that just makes things very confusing.

Anywho, I agree, the Robot mode is the "true self" and the other or alternate mode is just that, an alternative to robot mode.
