Any insights on who to pick up next? I already have the "core" figures. My recent acquisition of triggerhappy made me want to pick up some more obscure characters. I was thinking maybe blitzwing?

yeah, that'd help more... cus a core figure can be just megatron, or the core figures can range from frenzy and rumble..

honestly, I've never been a big fan of those guys. Something about them i have a problem with. I think just maybe in general I don't like combiners, with the exception of the seacons. I was looking at cyclonus and scourge to go with galvatron. Sorry im being so picky

I don't know if I would call Blitzwing an obscure character but how can you go wrong with a triple changer?

G1 Blitzwing's good and i think you could find him cheap at some auctions or collectors. plus you can never go wrong with a triplechanger.

See if you can find a Sixshot. He has 6 official transformations and an unofficial seventh mode.
I remember the old Sixshot commercial, "I figured out 4 modes. I figured out 5." Then there was that one kid that could only figure out 3.
The thing came with instructions for crying out loud! Then again, what self respecting kid bothered with instructions back then.

Devestator is a good choice. They are getting a little harder to find complete and in good condition unless someone knows of a reissue coming out soon. The only downsideis that Devestator falls apart if you just look at him. Okay, maybe he wasn't that bad, but I remember him coming apart easy. He's still my favorite combiner though.

oh yeah, i forgot to add Predaking...though as a 3rd season character he doesn't quite fit into the "core" group.

Technically neither does Galvatron, but he has that figure.
I think you're suggestion of Predaking is a great one and is one of the best looking combiners, although he can be a bit pricey. If you do get Predaking just watch out for Sky Linx, LOL.

If you can find the Insecticons in good condition then they're quite nice. Blitzwing and Astrotrain are both very good, too. Maybe you could consider Needlenose, Quake or Spinister.

Devestator is a good addition to a G1 Decepticon collection. If you dislike him, think of getting a knock off. I have two (the WSTF one and the mid-size) and am very happy with it. The WSTF one is pretty sturdy.
Blitzwing isn't obscure, but he's a good choice.
Frenzy, Rumble, Ravage, and Lazerbeak to go with Soundwave are nice ideas. I actually want a Racvange myself sometime. Not really obscure tho.
Galvy's gotta have his buddies.
BUT if you're thinking REAL obscure characters, how about Runabout and Runamuck? They're a nice little combo.
Bludgeon is a nice reference to the old Marvel stuff. He's one of those obscure guys who's not obscure if you know the old comics. Ditto Thunderwing.
And if you have too much money and you're looking to releive yourself of some of it, why not check out ehobby's minibot recolors? VERY obscure references, but they are a terriffic reference .... AND they have Bug Bite! And he's cool (I've also been thinking of snatchign up a version of him).

How about Reflector? He's not necessarily obscure but how often did you ever see them used outside of being just a random clone or henchman (yeah, I used the word henchman and find it freaking hilarious). Very rarely did you ever see him combine to become a camera.
He would be kind of hard to find, although there are knock offs out there. I think he was only a mail offer figure, at least I think he was because nearly everytime I got a Transformer for a while I got those little mail offer foldouts for him.

Nice choice!! I can actually say i have a complete G1 collection now every decepticon, and autobot. It took me alot of time, and alot of $$$, but well worth it. You will get much joy out of your G1 decepticons. Good Luck & have fun.

You seem to really know your stuff! I think those characters might not look right, especially bludgeon, next to the others. I think I might go with scourge and cyclonus, and maybe reproduce the part in the movie where unicron turns megatron, skywarp?, and the insecticons into galvatron, cyclonus, and scourge. I would set them up where they would mirror each other! How cool would that look!

http://www.tfu.info/1987/Decepticon/Six ... tmode2.jpgIt's this one, I think. I believe it was used in the
Headmasters cartoon as well.

Really? Blimey.
See, unlike like the others, that doesn't look like a distinct mode to me, so much as someone's just been pissing about with the puma mode to make it look like it's flying.
