Are the circled pieces in the picture below used to form Defensor, or are they just for the individual bots?

Excellent, thanks.

Can they even be used on him, if I wanted to? Doesn't look like they would fit to well in his hands..

Those cannons can be used in combined mode also, either in the hands or attached to the legs.

I hate mystery pieces.

Yeah, they're sort of like welding torches on arms; Hotspot has a repair bay mode.

Pretty much all the (5 piece) combiner leaders had that "third mode".

Except Scattershot ... we don't talk about his unofficial third mode.

Unless you're talking about Hun-Grrr, leader of the Terrorcons; he has two official modes, and a third "base" mode featured in the TF: Generations book.

If it's not the one, it's the other:

TFU.info's Hun-Grrr entry (with unofficial base mode)

In alt mode, pull Hot Spot's legs out, attach the chest pieces to the side - another mode maybe. I saw a pic before and tried it on mine. it was fun.

That would be his car carrier mode. Don't forget the guns on his sides where his hoses are ;)
