king atlas looks way better.. see this is a perfect example of the "Transformers Customizers" toy line I was talking about.. except you can have some differet heads but recast recolored body parts you assemble your self...

Anyways.. back on topic.. yeah same mold, different color, different characters... story of the trade I'm afraid..

welcome to the world of transformers repaints AKA "milking the mold"

King Atlas is meant to be a homage to the Japanese Dai Atlas from the Zone Series.

He is indeed a repaint of Machine Wars Starscream, who in turn is a repaint of the Predator Skyquake

Like most repaint, King Atlas, MW Starscream and Skyquake are all entirely different characters sharing the same mold over a 10 year period.

Skyquake being the best of the 3. Similar to how Machine Wars Prime is a crappy, repainted, stripped down version of Thunderclash from the later G1 Line.

Yes indeed, I've only been collecting for a little over a month now, and I've already learned how Hasbro loves to re-paint molds and call it something else (Movie SS became Thundercracker, '08 BB will become Cliffjumper, etc.).

And it's been like that even before Transformers were created ;)

They've been doing that since G1.

Prowl, Smokescreen, and Bluestreak are all the same mould.

The Seekers, Rumble, Frenzy, Lazorbeak, and Buzzsaw, same moulds.

The only ones who don't get this treatment are the ones that are either too lame or too big to make a profit on.

The only exception I can think of is the Fort Max mould. There have been three incarnations of him since the late '80's.

Yeah, and all three of them cost a billion dollars. Each.

The only group not infected yet are the Movie toys. I mean only the characters involved in the Movie.

Even before that. Each toy was based on a toy in the Diaclone line (except Skywarp).

And Fortress Maximus got the same treatment. In Masterforce he was repainted into his "little" brother Grand Maximus, and Car Robots Brave Maximus is a seperate character as well.

Jazz became Redeco G1
Starscream became Redeco G1 and Thundercracker
Megatron Yoyager had the metallic repaint at BestBuy
Ratchet got the metallic repaint, plus the "Nurse Ratchet" repaint
Prime Voyager got the "nightmode" repaint or whatever it's called
Barricade got a repaint into the Recon Barricade
Ironhide got a repaint into the blue off-road truck
Leader Brawl comes in 2 different paint schemes
Arcee I believe is being released as a black deluxe repaint
09 BB got the battle damaged repaint as well as the Cliffjumper repaint
Blackout was repainted into the orange Autobot coast guard chopper

yeah uhm, I don't think the movie line toys have been exempt from repaints. :P

I mean the characters actually involved in the movie. I don't think any of those repaints will come out in the sequel.

Whereas, for the other lines, some or most of the repaints are significant characters in their respective storylines.

The difference is that, to be able to complete the cast of say, G1, or Energon, you have no choice but to buy the silly repaints.

As for the movie, you can choose not to buy any of the repaints. As none of them were involved in the movie itself anyway.

Like me, i didn't buy any movie toy repaints. But i did grab some of the unique bots not involved in the movie. Such as Longarm, Arcee, and hopefully soon, Dropkick.

But for the other line i'm collecting, namely Classics, I can't ignore Ultra Magnus, Cliffjumper, Skywarp, and Devastator. All repaints. Dam!

According to that Japanese line we don't like to talk about, RID Fort Max is also G1 Fort Max.

Didn't buy that either. :P

They are part of the "optional" toys. Repaint or slight mod of the same character to represent the same character in another way.
