G1 Reflector

Why was he only a mail away? I think he would have sold like hotcakes at retail if he had been packaged in a window box with all three robots lined up. I mean, to a kid, that was getting three toys in one shot! I never knew he was a mail order as a kid, and looked in vain for him in stores. What toys did his mail voucher come with? Also, what are the odds of seeing Reflector re-issued?

Probably for the same reasons as the 07 Botcon set.

I used to ask myself the same question back in the 1980's. At first Reflector wasn't available as a TF in the U.S. AT ALL. We all saw him in the cartoon and wondered why the hell there was no toy.

Then months and months later came the mail away insert included with every TF that had the mail-away offer for Reflector. By then a lot of people had forgotten he existed.

Who knows what Hasbro was thinking. Only 1 out of all my friends mailed away for him.

That's exactly it. The same reason the Omnibots were mail away. Hard to obatin unless you collected the Robot Points, & the thing was about TFs...you had to collect them all!!

Im just suprised that it didn't take a load of robot points, if I remember right, reflector was only around $10 and two robot points.

That sounds about right. I remember having about a dozen of those order forms, too.

I kid you not, it seems like it took about a year from the time I sent the form before I received Reflector. I think I even forgot about him when he finally came in the mail! Still one of my favorite TFs, though the robots don't really look like their cartoon counterparts much.

There were several mail away orders.

Reflector & the Omnibots

The Powerdasher figures

Some G1 Characters such as - Ratchet, Sunstreaker, & Thundercracker

The story behind the mail orders is that they were mostly surpluses. Reflector and the Omnibots were not part of the original Transformers lore, but were leftovers from other series such as Diaclones. Instead of mass producing new ones, they schemed up the mail orders as a way to get rid of old merchandise.

I remember when my Reflector showed up in the mail, I was in maybe 1st grade and didn't even realize there was a mail in offer. I guess my mother had been holding on to the points, she told me they must have just known how much I loved TF and decided to send me one. Too bad I traded him off, I'm an idiot!

I remember when I got my Reflector.Oh so many years ago..

They were mail away because Hasbro wanted to give people incentive to buy more TF's.

Buy plenty of TFs
Collect plenty robot points
Get mail away swag

Reflector was an eazy to find item back in 1980's China Town in NYC and in most of the Chinese gift stores in different parts of Queens and Broolyn. Most of my friends had one and both me and my bro had one each.I was such a die hard fan that I also had to have the mail away one to.

Yeah, they were quite a bit of points, huh? Reflector cost around 20 points if I remember. The average Transformer, such as Jazz was worth 3 points.

That's no lie, I remember when I was trading off all my TF's when I was a kid and she warned that might not be a good idea those might be worth something someday. Still kicking myself.
