Assuming I have no way to get any of the other three versions, is the 06 Wal-Mart Masterpiece Prime worth it? I think I've heard some negative things, but I can't recall.

No Such thing. 20th Anniversary Prime is a general Release. not a Wal-Mart Exclusive, like Starscream.

I believe the differences are minimal, as in the shorter smokestacks, the blue gun, and the more orangy than red paint scheme. Other than that it is pretty much the same figure.

It's a great piece and relatively inexpensive for an MP figure. between $50 and $70.

Walmart MP SS, though is still a steal at $50.

There were two release's from Hasbro of 20th MP Optimus Prime. The first was very simular to the Takara relese.Only differences were paint app's and short smoke stacks.
The second has very little dicast [if any] a very bad paint job and no crome.

That is not true at all.

I have both 20th Ann versions and they are built with exactly the same diecast parts.

I now have both of the Hasbro 20th Primes too [got the DVD release today] and the DVD one does not have the same amount [or quality] of Dicast as the first 20th Prime from Hasbro

Yes they are. I have both as well. The chest and legs are diecast on both figures. The diecast quality is about the same but who knows if they are different or not. The only thing different is the paint job, painted blue eyes, shorter stacks, and no chrome on the DVD edition.

It feels a bit liter to me as well so I would guess that the they used a differen gauge od dicast metal on the DVD release.Well thats just my opinion.

DVD Prime is an exact physical clone of the Masterpiece Convoy/20th. Prime mold. (with short smokestacks)

The paint and color of the plastic are the only things that have changed between the figures, not the amount of die-cast metal.

Masterpiece Convoy:
Standard red/blue coloring
Detailed
Long smokestacks
Energon Axe
Gray rifle
Matrix
Megatron pistol
Trailer (cardboard) with plastic plug
Original MSRP: $99.99+ US

20th. Anniversary Optimus Prime:
Standard red/blue coloring
Detailed
Battle damage paint
Short smokestacks
Energon Axe
Gray (then Black) rifle
Matrix
Megatron pistol
No actual trailer, but insert looked like the inside of his trailer base
Original MSRP: $64.99+ US

DVD 20th. Anniversary Edition Optimus Prime:
Bright red/blue coloring (anime/comic)
No detailing
No battle damaged paint
Short smokestacks
Energon Axe
Blue and yellow rifle
Matrix
Megatron pistol
Talking display base
No trailer, or insert that looks like one
Original MSRP: $69.88+ US

I own the DVD version and other than a few paint chips in spots, he's just as good as the original.

Where can I get a MP Prime for the 17 bucks I hear he's been available for? He's been a venerable shelf warmer for the last 3 years right?

ACtually, I have the second release, and it has the exact same amount of Die Cast

Not quite.

The pricing is dependent on each individual Wal-Mart's planning. Some have him at his regular price of $69.88, others as cheap as $50.00, and some even cheaper still.

If none of your local Wal-Marts have him on clearance pricing, you'll have to find him online if you want him cheaper, problem is you're not allowed to ask for such help here.

Also, it's not true about him being a shelfwarmer for three years. He's been in stock off and on and once he's in stock, yes...he tends to be a shelfwarmer, but once he's sold out he's definitely off the shelves for quite some time. In fact, until Hasbro started clearing out their warehouses to help with the Movie toy drought, no one had seen one in stores for about a year.

Now that he's back and no one seems to be buying him...he might finally be a major shelfwarmer.

My local wally worlds had him pn clearance a year or so back, and he was as low as $30 or $40, I don't remember. I know I bought a couple.

When he came back around october of this year he was again on sale but at the $50 price point. Now with Christmas he is at full price around $70.

Wait a bit, he'll go down in price. Wait too long, though, and he'll be gone again.
