Push in the button, and then turn it like a dial clockwise.
EDIT: WARNING! THIS MAY BRAKE YOUR BUTTON!

And there was much rejoicing.

I wouldn't recommend this. This just broke the button on mine. I tried taking it apart because the button won't stay like it's supposed to. It feels like whatever trigger is behind the button snapped. I couldn't fully take the cannon apart because it feels like the front part is glued together. So I put it back together because it still looks OK. However, after I pushed the button back out, it somehow got pushed back in while I was putting it back together. The LED light no longer works on mine. And yes, the batteries are in correctly. The LED stopped working before I took it apart after I felt the button push in to far.

I'm so sorry for Ryan right now. But I'm happy for me because I don't yet have a MP Megatron to break! But really, why do you need the light to be on for a prolonged period of time? Once again though, sorry about your Megs Ryan.......................................

That sucks. I've done it a few times, but I just turn it slightly enough to work. If it broke on yours, I would have to recommend people refrain from doing it.

A refund for me breaking the toy? Nah, it looks fine for the most part and I've got another one coming that should arrive tomorrow or Thursday. I'll just swap the cannons and leave the busted one on the transformed Megatron (I bought two because I knew this figure would be an extreme pain in the ass to transform ... now I'll never need to do it again). Hopefully at some point I'll be able to figure out with someone how to fix the cannon. Taking Transformers apart without breaking something is not really my forte.

When I get mine I'll take a look at the scope and find how it comes apart. I'm getting increasingly handy at working with LED's so if I find the problem I'd be willing to fix yours up Ryan. I think I might put a red Luxeon in mine.....Blind people from 50 paces....Yeah that sounds like a plan.

A toy that truly lives up to the evilness known as Megatron.

Honestly I haven't decided which would be better. A Luxeon or a laser. Probably the Luxeon seeing as it's bright enough to light my room.

I wish I could switch my canon's red LED for a purple one.

You ain't the only one. I want a Megatron who shoots show-accurate fusion cannon blasts. But I can't really complain, we already have the figure as it is, so..................

Is it possible to put a blue filter in the cannon?

Would a blue filter with a red light create a purple light or would it just permit blue wave lengths through creating a blue light? I'm forgetting my physics...

I'm quite surprised that there is no keep the light on functionality. It would seem like a no brainer. Also, the red instead of a purple is also a perplexing decision. I wonder how hard it would be to take the cannon apart, remove the red lens and replace it with a purple?

You forget - this is Megatron we're talking about. It probably mentions somewhere in the instructions that keeping the led on permanently will generate a black hole.

Hmm...This is giving me a profitable idea. Man I need mine to ship already so I can take a look at this. I'm curious if enough people would be interested in having a filter and a slide switch installed. That would give you the ability to keep the light on for as long as you want and he would have a purple light.

Include some dumbass proof instructions and less than 20 bucks and I'd probably bite.

Well I meant for me to install it for you. All you'd have to do is hit the on switch.
