Classics Starscream Review

When Classics Starscream first came out, fans everywhere rejoiced. After all, this was the most G1 cartoon-accurate mold of our favorite treacherous air commander.

Then, Classics Skywarp came out, and everyone realized how pathetic Starscream's toy was. Putting it simply, Hasbro didn't give SS the respect he deserves.

This is why SS was the second-to-last pegwarmer in the shelves, outlasted only by a blander Astrotrain. But is the toy really that bad?

I got my Classics SS just this afternoon, but this is not the first time I've seen one. An officemate has one displayed on his desk, and studying SS closely, the worst I can say is the flushed out details, and lots of areas of gray plastic... And by the time I wanted one, there were no more TF classics on the shelves. Damn.

Now, Classics SS would be my last toy purchase for the year.

Image

JET MODE

What can I say? Starscream's is the only mold in the entire Classics line that retains all of the G1 cartoon attributes. Prime, Bumblebee, Mirage all got updated. Megatron got updated, too, I guess... And Hot Rod, well, he looks like his old toy, and his cartoon model, but SS is the most exact!

Mold-wise, at least. SS still turns into an F-15 with the same color scheme, but this time, the paint job pattern is different.

Image

The red paint only covers the outer areas of the wings, leaving the main body in plain plastic gray. Too bad, really. SS's mold had lots of details that could have been brought out by a decent paintjob.

Image

I'm sure panel-lining won't work well here. But if the toy looked just like the picture on the package, with the gray plastic parts covered in metallic silver paint, the toy would not look cheap and too plasticky.

Image

As a comparison, Ramjet volunteers for a side-by-side examination.
Image

Same body, different wings and nosecone.

Image

See, Ramjet is not entirely covered in paint. His base plastic is plastic white, but the flat red paint covering his wings did a good job of bringing out the details and panel lines. Ramjet looks less of a cheap toy.

Image
Image
Image

Also, I noticed that SS's wings are a bit on the flimsy side.

Image

ROBOT MODE

Starscream's robot mode is very impressive. It's really cool how they managed to find a way to faithfully translate the animation model into a toy.

Image

Sure, Masterpiece Starscream may have better articulation and details, but Classics SS is waaay more G1. Except, again, for the paint patterns.

The price for this faithful translation, though, is the limited articulation.
Image
Image

Plus, the wings get in the way of the arms when you're doing some posing.
Image

Transforming SS between modes isnot really that difficult. The fuselage-head-nosecone part may be a bit confusing for the newbies, though...

In robot mode, SS has more color, and looks closer to his G1 cartoon self.
Image
Image

The face needs to be painted, again to bring out the detail.
Image
Image

Here's a shot of the back view, with the wings folded, we're treated to more gray plastic. What does this mean? Always display SS facing the audience.
Image

While this deviates from the original look, I prefer to leave the arm cannons on the wings. This way, you could exploit the articulation of the arms better, without folding down the wings.
Image
Image
Image
Image

SS is also a bit top-heavy because of the wings, which by the way, are also flimsy, but hey, SS passes the kick test!
Image
Image

Funny thing I discovered in this seeker molds, the ball joints on the legs tend to loosen up, but both can still pass the kick test.
Image

Despite these flaws, the toy is very playable in general. Fun factor is also very high.

Image

ROBOT OR JET MODE?

Image

Robot mode! Jet mode is not that G1-looking anyway, right? Plus robot mode looks waaay better and has more color.

PROS

- most accurate G1 cartoon seeker mold
- good jet mode
- very good robot mode
- spring-loaded cannons have not-so sensitive triggers

Image

CONS

- needs more paint
- limited articulation
- flimsy wings
- quality control issues

Image

RATING

Image

3 of 5

SS scores average. The toy may be lacking in some departments, but it's still very enjoyable.

And because it's just cool to see seekers fight each other...

nice review, i enjoyed all the pictures

its hard to believe he was once a pegwarmer, seeing how popular he is now. I've wanted him for a really long time; unfortunately I came into the game late.

Did you get yours for a good price?

I tend to leave the missiles on the back wings too.. It still looks cool and his arm gets more movement freedom.

Pegwarmer?!?!?!?!?!?

Around here, they'd show up at the stores in full numbers... and be gone in a day and a half. Maybe less, maybe more, but still gone.

I got lucky when I got mine, happened to show up when they were stocking the shelves.

I'm such a sucker for seekers that I bought 2 Starscreams. :D One I have since "tweeked". I darkened his face, gave him some panel lines, and equiped him with some G1 null rays cannons. I'll probably be a sucker still when Takara releases their version of Classic Starscream.

I dig Classics Starscream quite a bit, but then again I'm an unapologetic Starscream fan. Aside from that I totally back the classics line. It's probably my favorite collection ever followed closely by Alternators.

Classics SS is very good IMO.

Only thing that bugs me is that the paint seems to be coming off pretty easily, namely the blue stripe and the yellow knee pads.

And that instead of being red, orangey-red paint was used.....

Awesome review. Very in-depth. I definitely have to say that I really do dig this version of Starscream, but I could see where some people would have a preference for Skywarp. His paint scheme is definitely way more sinister and a lot more intricate than Starscream's.

That being said, Anyone knocking the new seekers in general obviously doesn't remember how crummy the original G1 seekers were. I know it's borderline lunacy to criticize anything G1 around these parts, but does anyone really miss all the extra parts and accessories that you had to keep track of from the original line? The 'boxing gloves' hands for the G1 seekers? the detachable wings? Yeah, I'm definitely digging the Classics line. I just wish they had made Bumblebee as a VW bug instead of the weird hybrid thing that ended up being his alt mode for Classics.

As has been said kajillions of times, they couldn't because VW won't let them liscense any of their vehicles because they're "War Toys".

thanks guys! :D

yeah, I got my SS at a good price. you see, here in manila, these deluxe transformers sell for 700p, or around $15. before the movie toys came out, the classics line were put on sale for a little less than $10. i got this at the "sale" price.

now, i'm looking for a skywarp. :D

as for the takara classics, yeah, i'm also anticipating their take on classics SS. I might pick one up, and paint the hasbro version into thundercracker. that is, if takara won't release the other exclusive seekers

Classics Starscream was NEVER a pegwarmer around where I live.

There was a Classics Starscream that came out with a painted face BTW:

Now he's worth gold!

I'm glad I got my Classics SS when he first came out too. Now I wish I had bought a second one that I could keep MIB and hide in my closet against the collector's worst enemy: The Sun.

That was a very good review. It touched on all the good and the bad on Starscream. Still, even with all his faults, he is still one of my favorit Starscreams!

You are right. Must keep him away from the sun.

I have a second one which i plan to open soon to repaint him into my own version of Thundercracker.

(I don't like the treatment he got from Botcon)

I love my Starscream, I got him through a scalper as the Classics line never really made it where I live. :(

The only thing that truely bothers me about this toy is that mine came with 2 right missle launchers, apparently I wasn't the only one from what I've read on the internet..

I think its a brilliant representation of the character, despite the poor control at the assembly line ;)

Uh.. anybody got a left launcher for me? :D ;)

for me Classic Starcscream was never a pegwarmer, because he's nowhere to be found in shelves in our area!!!
since Jan2007 I've seen lotsa SS in stores, competing for space just like Classic Astrotrain but SS stocks quickly went down as fans were truly enamored withn the almost perfect G1 rendition of the iconic traitor. :D

he got excellent robot and jet modes! :D and he's the 2nd TF fig i got after Movie Deluxe Brawl(my 1st TF figure)...and it's been a long way towards building my own collection, and i always have fond memories playing and posing this fig for some serious poses and action sequences... :D

STAAARSCREEEEEAAAAAAMMMM!!!!!

isn't that SS with a head-swapped skywarp head?

anyways, to the guy with two left launchers, that's nothing.
a fellow collector who sold me his classics astrotrain told me that his SS had a knee joint that swings forward!

Great review! I'll have to purchase my all-time favourite seeker for sure now! Incidentally, would a fellow forum member be able to help me procure a Masterpiece Starscream (Hasbro)? If so, please DM me! Thanks in advance.

Agreed!

I also have to say outside of the size difference, I like the Classics mold way better than the MastrPiece versions.
