I'm looking to buy one of them and I'm not sure which one
Any opinions on which is a better figure and why?

I just recently chose the Hasbro Classics reissue over the Takara Encore version. I liked that the Hasbro one came with both Ravage and Laserbeak, plus the box was cooler. :D

One thing to keep in mind, Classics reissue Soundwave is actually a repaint of Soundblaster who can fit two cassettes in his chest instead of one. Encore is a reissue of the original toy if I recall correctly.

Nope, it's Soundblaster, too. Neither Takara nor Hasbro has ever rereleased the single tape version.

If you want G1 soundwave
Takara
if you want a better toy, that looks 95% like soundwave, with two tapes not one
Hasbro

yea, the encore is the single tape

I found this at BBTS, see how in alt mode the door is flush against the front for the encore version

As far as which to buy I would get the classics version (which I did :D )because it comes with 2 cassettacons vs. the Encores 1

Thanks for the input I'm leaning towards getting the Classics version because it includes both Ravage and Laserbeak

Get the classics version. You can't beat it IMO.
I don't how much its going for now but for retail price(I think I paid $29 for mine at TRU) it was an excellent deal all the way around.

Yeah, lol, I was wondering the same thing.

And really, you need to get them both. ;-) I am a sucker for tape deck transformers and always fall for every new variation/color scheme.

IIRC he is technically/partially correct. The takara reissues(TFC & Encore) are made from the soundblaster mold modified with a single tape door. Hasbro simply skipped that step and left the doubledoor.

Takara has reissued the single cassette door with Soundblaster buttons twice. Being TFC bookstyle #10 Soundwave reissue including laserbeak. Reissued in Nov 2003. Which I have. And the encore Soundwave with laserbeak with the classic type g1 box released in August of 2007. Which I don't have. But I also do have the classics toy r us release from March of 2007. Costs just 30 dollars. Soundblaster mold with double casstte storage with Soundwave colors. Laser beak and Ravage included. I believe the Tru exclusive classics Soundwave is the better deal and more affordable.

If you want to get technical, Soundwave circa 1984-1985 has never been re-issued. Including TFC series, the face mold is different not to mention the chest compartment.

As for which is the better version, I'd go for Encore, why? TRU's missile launchers are non functional due to safety concerns. Encore's weapon's are fully functional, capable of busting a 5 year old's eyes.

The Encore may have the flush single tap chest compartment, but it has the Soundblaster extended buttons. Where the original buttons were only slightly raised on the Encore, and I'd assume the original Takara reissue, the buttons stick out a good quarter inch like Sondblaster. Essentially its the Soundblaster mold with a retooled door to make it closer to the lost Soundwave mold.

If you want the single door and don't mind the bulging buttons at his waist go Encore. If you want the double door go Hasbro.

I have a Takara Soundwave reissue and the missles on his shoulder canon or gun don't launch. Don't overpay get the classics version instead.

Spacer AM2 are you sure of the missiles not launching? Soundblaster and TFc#10 Soundwave's missiles are functional with the exception of the shoulder canon whuch doest not have any springs.

I cant say ive tested mine (I have no love of missiles firing about willy nilly), but Im sure I would have noticed if there was no springs in mine. Id hasard a guess you're morlikly to simply be a victim of Takara's patchy QC.

Ok I checked to make sure and I was wrong. Takaras TFc #10 Soundwaves gun launches the chrome missle. Only his gun but not his shoulder cannon. The classics Soundwave neither launches the chrome missle.

if you wanna get to brass tax, pick up a vintage one on ebay. then you know it's the original mold and it's vintage!

I'd rather have non-functioning weapons on my figures, I hate when they go flying out or while they're on display the projectiles will weaken, therefore causing the loss of accessories...not a good thing. I don't like any of my figures with firing weapons actually. To me they're not toys they're characters. But I can't do anything because some of these are marketed towards children. Children who want lame gimmicks and reasons to choke and lose an eye.

Still.............more bang for your buck! BTW, have 100 of vintage G1 and not a single spring mounted missile lost.

I guess it all boils down to taste.
