Will the Real Optimus Prime Please Stand up!!

As the title suggests, we have too many Prime's and which one is the best buy? I am here to get those answers from fan feed back and discussion. So without further ado, lets begin:

MP-01: Original Masterpiece release and in my view the best rendition of Optimus Prime, due to coloring, Quality, and detail. The only draw back in my opinion was the exclusion of a trailer, and he has a grey gun.. I own him

20th Anniversary Prime: A rerelease from Hasbro, had a lot of the same qualities as the MP-01 Prime, except the cropped and changed Smoke stacks, which in my view dropped his score with me, and not to mention the Battle damage just seemed to be a cover for that change..but he has an accurate colored gun..I own him too

MP-01 unofficial Trailer: Nice job, very high quality, I love it, soo much detail, great box that matches the MP-01 box, and with repo-labels it would look absolutely gorgeous, I want one, here's the one draw back...its very pricey!!

Mp-02 Ultra Magnus: Same quality of the MP-01, just a different paint scheme, worth it? Not sure..it's based on the assumption that someone would love the mold soo much that a paint change and no armor would draw a person to buy it, I haven't yet. But I will one day!

MP-04 complete: A fix for the trailer missing from the first released Mp-01, quality, and joint issues, seems to have been what I have read from forum chats, but overall still a nice rendition. Not at all equal to the first release in my opinion. But nice to get it all in one package.Did not purchase still wondering if I should get the fan made trailer instead..

20th Anniversary DVD Optimus Prime: ok this one is less detailed but very cartoon accurate in colors. He's kinda Orangish, similar to the 2 different versions of the MEGA SciFi Optimus prime toys..Apparantly Orange equals anime accurate color?? I guess... except the gun which apparently is blue and silverish grey.. ugly...sorta..Not trailer, but he has a cool autobot stand with sounds and looks like he came out of the cartoon and stayed in cartoon colors..

So here is the likely Question, which Optimus Prime that has been released is the overall fan choice for a Masterpiece Optimus Prime figure? Which is the recommended buy? Which Optimus Prime Masterpiece is the real one?

I only own MP-01 but in my opinion he's the original and best. But I wouldn't write off 20th Anni Prime as he has his place. He's generally cheaper and easier to obtain for many fans and I could live with the shortened smokestacks had I not already picked up MP-01.

Jury's still out on MP-04 perfect addition as to me he's far from perfect. For starters where is Roller and the trailer doesn't look from the shots I've seen as good as the unofficial one. I couldn't see myself spending double the price of MP-01 for MP-04 it just doesn't seem worth it.

DVD Edition Prime just looks terrible. The colours and stupid base just don't do it for me. Yuk.

MP-02 Magnus. I love the look of this guy and can live with the fact that he's a repaint. I want to get one but the cheapest I've seen one so far MISB is £149 and I'm not willing to pay that much.

I personally think the best one is MP-04 as I really see no difference between 1 and 4, except for the addition of the trailer. Granted someppl may have gotten some with QC issues, but if you got one made well, it really is the same.

Movie OP is IMO garbage. Mine fell from a shelf 3 feet off the ground nto a thickly carpeted floor and the feet broke off.

MY MP-04 fell from a 5 foot shelf onto a wood floor and chipped the floor. The coloring looks much richer and the lack of chrome on movie along with the smoke stacks make him look alike a pale shadow next to 4.

I have cats lol.

I didn't think that DVD prime was as orange as that. Perhaps Ryan's camera dislikes him.
He's the only one I'm likely to ever get my hands on, but he's still too expensive for me at the moment.

Actually that's the original 20th Prime again there. Like you stated earlier, he's battle damaged and has the black gun. That was the only figure have either of those features.

As for the question which is the "real" Optimus Prime, I'd say none of them are. That's b/c of 1 small, but important reason: Roller! Remember in the episode Attack of the Autobots, Prime splits into his 3 components; robot/cab, trailer/base, and Roller. And since no official release has include the little guy, there is no real or perfect Prime in my book.

As for which is the best, oviously that is MP-4 b/c he the most complete, although he doesn't have the show-accurate black gun or Roller. Then, if you were looking for a second Prime, you should get the original 20th Prime w/ black gun as not only does he have the black gun, but he is movie-accurate. Then Ultra Magnus as he is an entirely different character. Then 20th DVD Prime as he has a unique blue gun and the talking base. And finally, the old MP-1. The most obsolite of the bunch.

I only have the 20th Ann. Prime and Love it. He lost the gravity war and his hip broke. But a little Superglue and now he's fine, can't even tell that there was ever a problem. Someday, I may get the repo smoke stacks (Tall), but as of yet, it is not that high on my priority list.

I am not a fan of the edition w/DVD. The colours look awful and the voice on the base is not from the Cartoon. It sounds like they had anybody just quote Prime. If you are going to do this they should at least used sound clips from the show!

I don't have a trailer. And from what I have seen the official trailer is lacking. If I find a fan made one at a decent price, I'll get it.

I guess I'm the resident MP Prime freak. I have 2 MP-01s, 3 20th Anniversarys, 1 MP-02, 1 MP-04, and 1 Movie Prime...so that is 8 versions of him.

I'd personally go with MP-04.

I guess it depends on what your looking for. If money was no object, I had space to display the trailor and I could get my hands on any, I would go for the MP04. It's the most complete of the lot. It might not have the black gun, but a grey is fine. As it stands, I have the original 20th with black gun and it is one of my favourite all time tfs. If money was a factor, I would get MP01. Failing that, the one I did get. There is no way in hell I would consider the DVD 20th (it looks horrible) or the Magnus repaint.

Someday, I may get the repo smoke stacks (Tall), but as of yet, it is not that high on my priority list.

Where can you get those from? And how much? I wouldn't mind upgrading Prime. The battle damage is fine, but the castration needs to be reversed.

Go to http://www.agesthreeandup.com/

Type prime in the search box and it's either the third or fourth one down. About $11. Sometimes you can find them cheaper on eBay.

Ahh i see, my bad.. I didn't recognize that that was the 20th standing next to the MP-04..good call!! i will have to disagree with your statement that MP-01 is Obsolete though.. IMHO I believe Mp-01 is the most accurate and represents optimus Prime in the most ways. I agree there is no accurate fully official Optimus prime, but if you want Accurate....then there is a fully complete and accurate prime, but its with the addition of the After Market Trailer Produced...ummmm.. I believe in Hong Kong...I could be wrong.. but it looked great and was in perfect size comparison to the MP-01 figure..but as it happens it doesn't open u and transform, i do believe there is a roller out there made by another company.. So for me, though MP-04 is official..MP-01 is the best made, Quality control, and Paint were on task, and the After Market trailer is superb..and even comes in a Box to Match the MP-01..

But I have revised my thinking.. and I believe the MP-04 Optimus Prime is the real Deal now.. and I will have to break down and purchase him.. regardless of price.. I just need to save up.. I mean he matches almost every point except Roller.. an I need to make sure to pray that his Quality is fine..

As of now, I only have the DVD edition of those 5, but I will hopefully be getting the 20th version.

I actually really like the DVD edition, simply because of the fact that his coloring is closer to the cartoon. My only complaint are the stupid gun coloring.

I don't even mind the lack of chrome... that just means less flaking.

But, I also really like the MP & 20th versions.... I just can't quite afford them.

Aside from that though, I'm almost done with my Optimus collection... I have Rid, Alternator, Pepsi, Cybertron GF, Armada, Energon, Classic, the "Ultimate Battle" 2-pack, THS-02, 6" War Within, and the DVD edition. ALl I need now is Laser Prime and the regular G1 Prime. The others don't have priority, eventhough I kind of want the Powermaster version and Star Convoy. Could care less about Machine Wars.

That's what I thought...almost done, then you start findingo ut about go-bots Prime and then you get tempted by Primals, and next thing you know, it's obsession. I think I have over 100 Prime figures now.

my personal favorite is magnus...no he's not a prime but a prime repaint. No he doesnt have armor. However, imo the white paint scheme looks 10x better than than the red and blue. I will be the first to admit that this is a biased opinion as the only other version i have gotten around to purchasing is the 20th edition prime. I cant imagine slightly different paint apps and longer smoke staks being enough to sway me.

I disagree about the Magnus being the same quality as MP-1. The chrome is horrendous and I had to send two of them back because some of the white plastic was yellow straight out of sealed boxes. It took me three tries to get a good one and the smokestacks still look like a cat chewed on them. These were the immediate flaws. There were others as well. Don't get me wrong, I love the figure and tell others to get him, I simply hope they get good ones. I do plan to get replacement stacks from A3U for him.
As far as my personal favorite for the mold goes, I say 20th Prime with long stacks. The rest are fine too AFAIK but the damage grew on me and the black gun is a big plus too. I like the idea of MP-4 having the trailer but it would end up as just another Prime trailer I have in storage.

Because of this thread and the awesome galleries here, I got myself an MP-04 today. I already have a 20th Anniversary Prime but I wanted a non battle damage version.

I like my personal setup.

I have the original Hasbro 20th anniversary prime but I added longer smokestacks. I also have the unofficial transforming trailer for Masterpiece Prime, which in my opinion is actually better than the regular version.

To top it all off, my 20th Anniv. Prime W/ added smokestacks is displayed standing on the DVD version base.

I could. Until I got the longer 'stacks off eBay for $7 shipped. Now I can't look at my friend's with the short 'stacks. I really can't.

Yeah i wouldn't mind picking up the DVD Prime, he does have the cool base, even though its not Optimus Prime's voice, i would probably display my Takara version on top of the dvd version base.. just for show..

What is this battle-damage people keep referring to? Is it the black spray effect (presumably soot or burnt metal) I can see in Ryan's gallery?

I don't own any of those Primes mentioned, but looking from the pictures shown, I'd go for MP-04 (Perfect Convoy) since its anime styled, but it eneds the all black blaster rifle to be perfect
