Report from TRU Japan's TF: Revenge Toy Launch

Today was the official release date for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Japanese title: Transformers: Revenge トランスフォマ:レベンジ) figures in Japan.

A Toys R Us store in Fukuoka marked the event with a roll-out of the first wave of figures, large sized promotional material (huge stand-ups, etc), a give-away of an exclusive Mini-Con (Guardian Sky) and some pretty nice sales.

All Henkei Deluxe figures were marked down to just under 20 USD each (their MSRP is about 28 USD).

Encore figures were put on sale, 45 USD for Metroplex, 35 for Thundercracker/Skywarp, 30 for the Big Mission Cassette set, and 6 for any remaining Hoists they had.

Music Label figures were put on sale as well. The white Convoy iPod dock was marked down to about 70 USD while the Soundblaster mp3 player was marked down to 50.

A refresh of the Mickey Mouse/Optimus Prime figure was also released.

The store got in a HUGE amount of movie figures. Dozens of each figure. As an additional incentive to get people to buy figures from a movie they hadn't seen yet, ALL movie merchandise was immediately put on sale for 30% off. That's still a bit higher than the US prices. Leader Prime and Megatron, usually 75 dollar figures, were marked down to about 55, for example.

How well did the sale go over? It's now 8pm and the shelves have been picked almost clean. There were a few Primes, one Megatron, a couple of assorted Deluxes, a few stray Robot Replica figures...and an entire shelf of Demolishor.

If the first day's sales are any indication, this movie is going to be HUGE over here!

Sweetsauce. I went to Yodabashi Camera and Bic Camera today but by the time I'd finished work Guardian Speed and Guardian Powered were no longer available. Sadly, there were no such reductions in price.

Sideswipe and Soundwave sold out quickly, there were still plenty of the other characters.

Felling left out, I contented myself with Scout Class Dead End.

Excellent report Professor! I'm sure our Friends in the land of the rising sun will be completely taken by the new movie, as are we.. nice sales and cheaper prices.. 55 for a leader class is very very close to what I paid for mine here.. it was 44.00 at the local Wal-Mart.. still.. too bad you didn't have some shots of the display and the isles.. it would have been nice to see..

The displays aren't all that exciting, but they are larger than I'd expected. Even though photography is frowned upon, I'd probably have tried to sneak a picture or two, but with the shelves picked clean, it'd be kind of a boring shot.

2 years ago, I visited this same TRU for the launch of the original movie figures. The set-up this time around is probably five times the size of the original. The 2007 movie REALLY revived interest in the Transformers in Japan (or, in Fukuoka at least).

I had to make a choice between TRU and Bic Camera. It seems like I chose wisely.

You sure did.

Do you know what Bic's selling the Deluxe and Voyager class figures for? Before the sale, TRU's prices are about 4,000 yen for the Voyagers and 2,300 for Deluxes.

Bic's prices for the 2007 figures were the lowest I came across.

Bic's prices for the 2007 figures were the lowest I came across.

Bic had scouts for 840 and deluxes for 1840. Yodabashi had them for 1000 and...1980, I think. Odakyu department store had deluxes for 2450. I didn't really look at the voyagers. I'm probably gonna go again tomorrow to try and get Sideswipe, so I can double check.

Thanks! I'm going to have to check out Bic for the Scout figs. TRU was completely sold out of Scouts.

Day 2 Report:

The entire store's remaining stock of Transformers has been consolidated and now fits into an area slightly larger than an endcap. Even "showcase" items like the music label figures were moved to help fill up space.

Remaining movie stock:

A half dozen Leader Primes.
2 or 3 each of Starscream and Ironhide.
Entire shelf of Demolishor.
2 Bumblbees.
1 Dirtboss.
A few assorted keychains, magnets, etc.

The Transformers Revenge of the Fallen toy line has officially been released in Japan over the weekend by Takara Tomy. The figures are now available online, or at stores for those in Japan. Our own Professor Smooth talks about the release and more in his thread here. You can also view a few images of Takara Tomy's figures, by clicking here.

That's nice and all, but what about Europe? I've been checking out my local TRUs here in Frankfurt two weeks in a row, and we don't have a 1/1000000000000² of the ROTF line that was shown at Botcon. Well, we have the Leader Prime and Megatron and a few voyagers and legends, that's it. I want Ransack and Leader Jetfire!!
