How to fix your RotF Superion in under 15 minutes

Hey everyone, (anyone with any experience modding/fixing a toy probably doesn't need to read through this, just make sure you end up swapping both sets of parts, not just the knee).

If you're like me, you've bought RotF Superion and remembered what a huge piece of crap the Stormjet (Silverbolt in this instance) is.

You might have noticed that his knees in robot mode bend the wrong way entirely and that he doesn't quite transform properly.

That's because he is wonderfully and wrongly assembled every time someone goes about making a batch of this mold.

This fix is easy, you will need a small screwdriver, Phillips head preferably and some work space.

The problem:
Image
Nope, that ain't right...

First step: Disassemble

Now, you're going to take the legs apart. Be sure to keep everything in order and leave those black hip joints (in yellow circles) in place. They have springs in them you don't want to lose and we'll get back to them later.
Image

Second step: correct the lower leg parts

You will separate them like so
Image

the piece pulls out of the leg via a pin you can simply slip out, like so
Image

Third step: Swap knee joints

Image

Forth step: Reassemble lower legs

Fifth step: Swap hips

You will need to use care when swapping the front part of the hip to the other side. It's easy, but it's a hassle if you let those little springs pop
Image

Insert the lower leg portions in and close up the hip pieces. Did you do it right? Yours will look like this if you did:

You're done. Easy eh?

So what does this little fix get you?

Thanks for this tutorial!

Though it's freaking rediculous that this would even be needed....

Do you mean because it's so easy or because the production error is so obvious?

In regards to it being easy...I know, I acknowledged that. You'd be surprised how many people never knew the toy was messed up to begin with though. The Stormjet mold comes up every time someone discusses factory errors and there are always questions as to exactly what is wrong with the toy because for the most part, it seems fine.

If you were referring to the production error being obvious...yea. Takara's production people just don't seem to care.

Didn't I post this a few weeks ago? Oh wait I did, here:

Of course yours is a bit more detailed and has pics to.
But yea the procedure is fairly simple.

Just need to be extra careful with the tiny springs.

Great, but is there a fix for the saggy jet front though?

Well, we're out of cookies, so no treat for you.

At any rate, now that I've done it, it's awesome.

This topic comes up about once a year or every time the Stormjet mold hits the shelf, so really the fact that either of us have posted this is nothing special.

He's probably talking about the peg that is too small to hold the nose of the jet to the bottom of the torso. It causes him to hunch over at if the peg slips out.

what do those little springs in there do?

They hold the ratchet joint in the position you put it into.

Ah, then no.

The little springs put pressure on the ratcheting joints to support him in combined mode.

Anyone looking for him, just go to Target with the DCPI number: 087-06-0146

They'll bring him to the front counter for you.

Does the Universe Superion set have this problem or just the ROTF Target exclusive set? I don't remember the original Stormjet having a problem like this.

Every version of the Stormjet mold ever made has had this issue.

Nope, not every version.

The Japanese Superlink version, Afterburner, was actually assembled correctly. If the pictures in the Gallery are anything to go by:
Image

Thigh pegs visible on the outside of the legs.

but yeah any of the American releases seem to have the problem.

Damn exclusives, I was hoping they'd make it down here in another store.
May have to give in and buy them from BBTS even though they are slightly more expensive there.

Since we're playing the petty corrections game, Afterburner came with correctly assembled hips but the knees still fell victim to being swapped, though not at the 100% rate the US version Stormjet had.

Wow. Not sure if I'm gonna do the fix since I didn't notice the problem the first go around and Energon Superion held together just fine.

If you still have yet to find them I would resort to (or at least attempt in an effort to not have a screwed up toy) cannibalizing a click action pen and start snipping the spring. The smaller the pen diameter the better considering the size of those posts. Anybody else with a better or more detailed cheap solution please jump in. I'm part Redneck so I don't always have the precision fixes off the top of my head but I can usually come up with something workable pretty darn fast.
I don't have my Stormjet easily accessible so I can't be more specific on ideas about that spring size.

Awesome...now, how many of you out there actually have a ROTF Superion yet? They aren't even released in the US yet.

Doesn't much matter since nearly every version of Stormjet has the same screw-up. I'll use this info to correct my Energon version. Besides, there are more of them floating around here than people think. Official release dates don't mean diddly. If it gets shipped into a store from the main distribution hub, regardless of how long they are supposed to sit on the stock, most stores are shoving stuff out to keep their stock rooms from becoming overcrowded. Hasbro's threats don't seem to phase the major retailers much.

Sorry, did not mean to sound petty. And I did say "If the pics are anything to go by".

For those not wanting to do the fix, its simple, just do it in a well lit place on a large table, and separate the thighs carefully.

I had one of the springs fly off to, fortunately I did find it.

I was extra careful with the other leg and the spring did not fly off.

Make sure the Screw driver is a size 0 (zero) Philips screw driver or it won't fit in the lower leg holes. if its to small it will be hard to make it unscrew the screw.

The Thigh screws are easily accessible and you can use pretty much any screw driver.

Ohh and Having functional knees makes a world of difference.

Then I guess I was dreaming since I've bought four of him in 3 different stores now.

He's out.
