G1 Blitzwing question(s)

Okay, so I've never owned a Blitzwing as a kid. He was one of my favorite Decepticons growing up and up until yesterday I had never even laid a finger on the G1 toy. Then I found ebay and faster than you can say "C'mon down Autobrat!", he's sitting on my desk.

The only problem is, he didn't come with an instruction sheet. I've figured out most of his transformation, except for two purple little things that slide out of his shoulders when he's in robot mode. Do these do anything of importance or are they just decoration?

You'll see them at the top of this picture on either side of the turret. I just can't figure out what they do (other than flip out as some sort of surprise weapon).

And a backup question; is there a website that I can access to download G1 instruction sheets?

They flip out to form tail fins in jet mode.

See the image @ TFU.info:

And the purple bits are his rear fins for jet mode.

Ohh for the time when instruction manuals meant something, as in there were actual instructions printed on it not just useless pics.

And it was a booklet of the same size not some different size piece of badly folded paper.

You are not alone!
I didn't realize about the rear horizontal tail fin until this thread which forced me to look at the instruction sheet again. It's definitely look a lot better with the purple tail fin extend out.
