Newly finished shelves..........

I just completed some custom adjustable shelving for my collection. Built the shelves from scratch, stained, and polyurethaned them myself. The polyurethane has fully cured per the manufacturers indications, and has no indication of stickness, but still puts off a stong chemical ordor. I wonder if there is any danger posed to my figures from the fresh polyurethane and the fumes coming off it? Anybody have any ideas?

When I built mine I waited a week. The smell was 80% gone. No damage to my figures.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably do the same, right now the fumes are so strong I can literally taste it in my mouth. I've got the ceiling fan on and the widows open, hopefully the odor will subside soon.

Gack! I'd worry more about your well being before the figures.

I've got the door closed to the room they are in, I don't taste the fumes unless I go in there. I should be okay, at least that's what the giant orange talking mushroom sitting beside me keeps saying...........wait a minute!

Hey, this topic is my chance to ask something I've been wondering. I want to display my stuff out in the open (on shelves), but I'm worried about dust buildup if they've been out for 6 months or so. It will be impossible to dust them all and get it out of every crevice, I think. For now, I've kept them in a closed display case.

I've seen some big collections on Seibertron; how do you all handle this? Do you regularly dust them? Do you have a air filter?

Dust is just kinda part of the deal..it's not really gonna hurt 'em. I found stealing a set of brushes for applying makeup from the wife handy tools for dust removal. Works like a charm. Some say compressed air, but I don't think it works very well. Maybe I just don't do it often enough...

El Duque! Whatever you do, if you should see it, DON'T go towards the light! Otherwise, the giant orange talking mushrooms are great conversation partners. Very cheeky fellows.

Yeah, dust is going to come by and even when it does, it's only dust.

I use both brushes(paint brushes in my case) and compressed air. The majority of dusting only requires brushing. I use a wide paint brush for starters and then follow up with my 1400-KF Filbert brush. I then finish off by a couple of short blasts of compressed air to clear out nooks and crannies.

Since there's a discussion about dusts, how often ya'll dust the TFs and shelves?

I dust every couple of weeks. I have a dusty room.

I dust every time I decided to totally rearrange a shelf or add a shelf to the stack. As of yesterday I added the last shelf to the wall that there is space for so that won't happen again. If you're organised you could do a shelf or two a week.

When I get shelves loaded after they have cured a little longer I will post some pics. Sadly I can already tell my new selves won't house my entire collection by a long shot.
