Third Party Madness: A Case Study

OK, I've officially got third party madness, either that or I decided to use my last display real estate for a cool display-I'm not sure which.

It's no secret that I decided a while back not to display or collect any more Movie figures. I currently don't have any of my movie figures out and I haven't collected any ROTF figures. The other day, I did buy Ransack to display with my Henkei seekers but that was really a whimsy purchase (and to fill the gap until Ghost SS is released). The Long Haul I bought too has already been returned. It really comes down to not really liking the look of them with my Classics/Henkei collection, third party add-ons, and MP figures.

Any way, I was also going to purchase Buster Prime since he's like a ROTF Masterpiece and Black Leader Prime because of his uniqueness, but have wrestled for weeks now as to how I'll display them and how I can get them to fit in. In thinking about this more and more, I decided that in lieu of these two figures, I'd spend the extra money and really do one last really nice display. So I cancelled my ROTF Prime pre-orders and set out to purchase what I hope will be the corner stone display of my collection. Here's what I'm going to do...

I spent some time the last couple of days looking online for a Classics or Henkei Prime and realized that with the recent trailers released, they're really scarce. So I wound up buying the last one at BBTS along with a second FP G3 Trailer (my first will forever be displayed in trailer mode). Then I headed to TFSource and picked up a TFCON Powered Commander set and the Convoy-colored God Sword from Perfect Effect. The price for the sword is nuts, I know, but at least from their preorder, it appears that there aren't too many of them available. Right now, it looks like there are 10 left for pre-order. I decided to pony up for Powered Commander instead of a second DIA so I'd have the fourth (and hopefully final) Commander Armor set and because I figured for a display, having that energon case would really complete the look with Roller. Once I get everything, I'm going to buy a nice black acrylic base and display them like the DIA Commander set up on FansProject's site in the G3 Gallery, with the base upright and open in repair mode, with the God Sword in one hand and the pending TFC GOW 2 gun in the other.

I may be sad to see Buster Prime come and go but this display seem like it will fit my collection a lot better and be a worthy way to use the prime corner real estate on my desk.

I'm with you on passing on Buster Prime. And the G3 Trailer and CC armor and weapons are worth it. I just don't feel like I personally need the DIA ad Powered Convoy sets or the swords. Still, I'd love to have the energon case for my G3 Roller...

Third party madness? I don't think so. :)

Right now with Hasbro's focus on the movie line toys, honestly, the only way to get your fill of any other kind of Transformers products is to either look into the previous toylines or look to the third party market's quality offerings like the G3 Trailer.

Also, with your collection's setup and how movie figures aren't going to fit in well, passing on Buster OP and the black repaint isn't an unreasonable move. If the God Sword and TFCon Powered Commander fit in with your collection better then it's the "right" purchase, I think. :)

You gotta do what's right for you and your collection needs, right? I think that if Buster OP and the black repaint are ultimately going to be out of synch with your collection and you won't be as happy as you'd like with them, it's a good thing you went with something else instead.

You're not mad. Just make sure you show pics when you get the chance :-)

I definitely want to get a TFCon armor, but with my wife's embargo until BotCon, I may have a tough time. They're evaporating quickly.

Feel the same too. I was given a lot of opportunities to get ROTF LC Optimus (despite it's near movie accuracy) but, well something's stopping me. But them 3rd party product (FP's) anyways really have pardon the pun "The Touch". I'll inspect the TAW sword if it's anywhere near as good first then I'll get it for my Cerebros.

What you said was another reason for me to push ahead with this: supplies of the TFCon armor and Henkei/Classics Prime are becoming scarce. I figured if I was going to do this, now was the time, even if Buster and Black Prime were cut away to make it happen.

Will definitely post some picts. when this all comes together.
