Is Smokescreen becoming another Ultra Magnus?

For years, Ultra Magnus was one of the most infamously repainted characters out there. The poor guy just got very few molds of his own and instead was treated to weak repaint after weak repaint.
Looking at Smokescreen these days, that poor character is now getting the excessive repaint treatment as well.
Now, you can argue that he originally started as a Bluestreak/Prowl repaint in 1985 and you'd be right.
The thing is, these days pretty much anytime, they have a random car they want to issue a repaint version of, they just slap some blue and red on it and call it Smokescreen.
Thoughts? And which other characters do you feel also suffer from this?
I'm not looking for molds that you think are overused (that topic has been beat to death)

I think there's some truth to this considering that Legends Class Rodimus is getting a Smokescreen redeco in an upcoming Movie-line Legends assortment.
The redeco really doesn't fit the mold and leaves me somewhat confused. Why not make him Windcharger? or Tailgate?, or Freeway?, or Chase?

They should have used Autobot Jazz for Legends Smokescreen like the last two times, not Classics Rodimus

But I have to agree with the observation. I don't mind it though, as I love the colors he has on any car. I'm more peeved about the fact the name has been used for a Jet and a Crane for no apparent reasons, other than trademarks.

I'm starting to agree. He has been getting a lot of random repaints recently, for no apparent reason. The Universe deluxe version made sense, obviously, but this new legends one doesn't. There are already both a Classics/Universe AND Movie-verse incarnation of Smokescreen, so where does this one fit in? I collect Smokescreens, but I probably won't get this newest one, simply because it doesn't fit in with any line that doesn't already have a Smokescreen.
However, I kind of think it suits the mold more than Rodimus did, at least in car mode, and I'm not quite sure I agree with Jazz being used as the usual basis for Smokescreen. I suppose since there wasn't a Movie version of Prowl or Blue/Silverstreak, it works somewhat for that line.

Hasbro is probably dishing out the Smokescreen name on a toy every now and then just to keep the name with their copyright. I feel that the Smokescreen repaints have been forced. He's been multiple repaints for two different molds. You don't see Cliffjumper and Nightwatch Prime jumping over to RotF.. but we've got Smokescreen changing molds all the freaking time.

I actually like the new Legends mold and will probably snag it, but the deluxe fig was horrible (and the 2 look nothing alike)

You mean the movie version was horrible right?
Because if we're talking about my beloved Henkei version good sir, we're going straight to fisticuffs.

I don't even think there's a question that he's talking about the lame ass ROTF version.

I don't think there's any doubt about that. That movie version was awful.
I'm still kicking myself for not getting the Henkei version though. It was pretty awesome.

(also, I actually like the movie Smokescreen colors. That blue is pretty much one of a kind.)

After that post, found one on Toy Arena. Going to order it this weekend-it's too nice to miss.

Your memory is short, my friend. I was fawning over said Henkei Smokescreen in your presence on Saturday.
Of course, I did that about a 150 other figures also so I'll forgive you if you have forgotten already.

I think swerve is another like this, paint a sports car red, call him swerve, even though the original was a truck!

My ROTF Swerve is Sideswipe.

Snap. It is pretty awesome indeed. I'm a bit cheesed that BBTS decided to charge $4 more than the other Henkei deluxes though. But that wound has mostly healed.

I kind of like it myself. Enough to buy it anyway.
Glad you found a Henkei one DevastaTTor!
