Figures you loved until...

I want to know about figures you absolutely loved until an update or different mold of that smae character came along that you just felt was so much better.

It doesn't even have to be the exact same character, I imagine for a lot of you it will be "homages." For instance one for me was Cybertron Smokescreen because I loved the G1 throwback colors. A lot of AEC figures fall into this category for me, having looked a lot weaker when we finally got Classics/Universe versions of them.

Hmm...

Energon Saber: The Armada Air Defence Team is my favourite Mini-con team, and when they got redone into the Energon series, I was a bit skeptical, but damn I like it so much more. The combined Saber actually looks like a blade, and it's just a great rebirth of the team.

Thundercracker:> Starscream.

I used to be amazed by the Robot Masters' Starscream / Seekers mold. But the Classics / Universe mold blew me away because it was so much more articulated, and not as "80's Toon" styled while keeping cartoon accuracy.

ROTF leader Prime > 07 Movie Prime
HABB > 07 delux BB

This doesn't really happen to me. Even if something better shows up, I still love the originals for what they are.

I thought 2007 OP was the pinnacle of TF toy technology...until ROTF OP came along.

Same with 2007 deluxe Bumblebee, which was succeeded by ROTF Preview BB, and soon trumped by HA. Still, all three are great figures IMO, since neither are flawless.

As for 2007 Voyager Starscream, I wasn't all that impressed with it even when I first bought it. I later got my hands on the G1 2007 repaint, which I liked even better than the original. Then came ROTF voyager Starscream that blew both out of the water with its vastly more streamlined alt mode and improved head-sculpt.

But at was until I finally got my hands on the crowning glory of all Screamers past and present: a Takara MP G1 repaint Starscream.

Now waiting for Leader Class ROTF Starscream to weigh in, but at best it will simply share first place with the MP. G1 will always rule over the Doritos.

Then there's 2007 Leader Megatron, which I was impressed by the fact that they could even manage to make a transformable toy out of. Alas, it had a less-than-accurate bot mode, but a fairly decent alt mode kind of makes up for it. While ROTF Leader Megs isn't perfect by any means, it still trumps 2007 Megs with a better sound gimmick and a sufficiently imposing bot mode, although the tank mode suffers from severe chunkiness.

I actually have felt that way about the seeker molds a couple of times. I loved the G1 planes but the Robot Masters blew them out of the water for me. I actually loved the RM mold so much i bought 5 sets of it, but am now down to one (having recently sold my second-last one to Racorclaw0000) If I didn't go to Botcon 07 and get those seekers I probably still would have felt that way.

But speaking of that Classics/Universe seekers mold, I loved that first Starscream (classics) until I saw the Universe one. I now have both, but Classics Starscream is ridiculously inferior when I have them standing next to each other. I have a feeling I might sell him off sooner or later.

Loved G1 seekers until I got the Robotmasters. Oddly, the Classics seekers took a while to grow on me. Felt they were too blocky initially and Classics Starscream's colours seem kind of sickly or pale. I love Acid Storm and Henkei Starscream but the Robotmasters will always have a place in my spark. Plus the RM's had those cool chest launchers. Oh and a special shout to the Armada seekers!

Loved G1 Galvatron as a kid but much prefer Classics and it's movie accurate robot mode.

Is it wrong to like Mega SCF Rodimus more than the others because he's the most movie accurate bot mode and looks well with G1 Prowl?

Loved Energon Rodimus. Didn't think I could like the mold more then I got Checkpoint. 1 mold, 2 great colour schemes.

Loved G1 Springer then I got the Evac repaint.

Quite frankly, I could say this about each past generation of toys. And I mean every one of them. Technology is so advanced compared to when the G1 toys were new. Case in point, G1 Prime. The crown jewel of toys for me when I was a boy. Now I have the 25th anniversary re-issue for collector sake. It was a christmas gift last year and I love it. But if I've got just one figure to show off and thats it.....I'm not picking G1 Prime over MP prime. Ever. Compared to MP Megatron, G1 Megatron looks like a Fisher Price toy.

So simply, I used to love all of the old toys until all of the toys came out.

P.S. I still think that 07 movie BB trumps all of the other versions of him. I hate it when they take a perfectly good mold and ruin it with something stupid like a gimmick "cannon arm". Why Hasbro is content on ruining good figures this way, I'll never understand. I would love my "Masterpiece" Ultimate BB so much more if he had two regular arms, instead of one good arm and one cannon arm with a bright orange launching missile. :-?
