Working on my G1 Blaster

So today I decided I was tired of having a non-opening Blaster and decided to do something about it. I found a YouTube video outlining the process and it looked easy enough. Grabed my precision screwdriver set and went to opening him up, but to my surprise someone had beat me to it. By beat me to it I mean opening him up and jacking around with his guts, not fixing him. I'm sure a lot of you guys on here have done this repair and I have some questions. Right now I'm screwed, because who ever did this in the past ruined the small black box that interacts with the hatch release arm. For some reason they decided to cut off the sloped piece so there is nothing to push the the release arm up. I understand how the release mechinism works and I'm pretty sure if I had all the right undamaged pieces I could make it work. I've already bought a junk Blaster to salvage parts from just waiting to him to arrive.

On to my other questions. Why is the eject button linked to the off button in the middle? Do you need a actually push both the eject button and the off button at the same time to get the hatch ot open? Is just pushing the eject button what jacks up the mechinism? Also there is a horizontal spring that the play button seems to interact with. When everything is working properly what does the play button do? I don't recall it ever doing anything when I was a kid, but then again the Blaster I got for Christmas wouldn't eject right out of the box. Thanks in advance, if this belongs elsewhere feel free to move it.

Mind you, I have a reissue Blaster, so yours might be a bit different, but the play button will hold in the "on" position until you press the "off" button. Also, when I press the "eject" button the "off" button will depress too, which would make sense on a real boombox, when you think about it.

So when everything is working properly when you push the play button it stays in position until the off button is pressed. Looking at all the parts and how they interact that makes sense. It seems like it would work better if the eject button could move independently. Thanks.
