Personally, I prefer most of the Classics versions to Henkei. For me the chrome for the sake of chrome isn't much of a selling point. There are exceptions, such as Megatron and Astrotrain, where the Henkei versions are more pleasing to the eye but in general I'm happy with Classics.

Henkei Megatron was a must! Of the rest there are some slightly better in one version than the other, but it is down to personal taste. I prefer Classics Hot Rod myself, despite seeing the argument that the Henkei version might be a bit more G1 accurate. Cyclonus in particular has me torn between the two, as the US one is quite like his original toy, while the Japanese one seems more like the cartoon.

For most of them I'd probably err towards the Henkei as more G1 accurate, but Classics Ratchet looks pretty nice, and in some of the Japanese ones there does seem to be a case of chrome for it's own sake. Honestly though, it's difficult enough for me to find either at a cheap price, if you can get a Classics version of a toy you want, for a price you're willing to pay, may as well chance it.

It's really a mixed bag regarding Classics and Henkei. I personally don't think show accurate paint jobs are that necessary since these lines are meant to be an upgrade of G1 characters, thus I'm a bit more willing to let certain discrepancies go. While I would say the henkei version of Megatron would be more desirable purchase to most collectors, I'm not too big on the major amount of white used as apposed to gray.

Price wise I'm fairly sure everything is gonna be about the same at this point since both lines have died... though Henkei is getting 1 or 2 re-releases.

Sometimes Hasbro looks better, sometimes Takara. If you're any good with paint you could just buy the cheaper option and fix it yourself! Apart from Megatron the Hasbro versions haven't been hideous.

Like everyone has mentioned, one can be better than the other and vise versa, but then again its up too you and what you want. Like me i started collecting classics at the beginning and i really liked them alot, pure G1 upgrade and homeage there. Then a friend got me into henkie line and just to see the difference is amazing really! The chrome is a nice touch on the henkei molds if you like that, which i do, but the color of the plastic is what im talking about for the henkei molds, just awesome is call i can say.

I agree with everyone here, you have to pick up Henkie Megatron and astrotrain! those 2 is a must for sure and also Red Alert is a bigger must as well. And i would say Henkei Inferno would be another, cause i have both and too me, theres a BIG difference in detail and the red color of plastic Henkei uses and more G1 accurate and the chrome water cannon is a nice touch.

One more thing to answer your question about Hot Rod, at first i just got Henkei version and then when i heard about the upgrade kit from Fan's Project, i had to have the classic version for the upgrade kit and the henkie version as hot rod. also, i have some really good contacts where your ready to buy classics or henkei items pretty reasonable, just PM me.

Red Alert isn't the only figure that's exclusive to a side, Ultra Magnus, Cliffjumper, Dragstrip and Overkill are also side exclusives(not counting the random repaints thrown in just to bulk up the lines).

As for characters that have a distinct advantage on a specific side (at least to most people), I'd like to add:

Henkei:
Dinobot
Hotrod (Armada Hotshot)

Classics/Universe:
Sideswipe

I have 2 ways of sorting figures in my displays, by character and Classicsverse Autobot and Decepticon. And a God shelf that doesn't factor in.
The only Henkei that stands on my Classicsverse shelf is Jetfire and even he has the boosters from Classics Jetfire so I don't have to deal with the LOLRANDOM chrome. The only other Henkei figures are Optimus, Megatron, Starscream and Hot Rod on their character shelves. I sold the other ones I had and at this point I'd only consider buying a Henhei Magnus if it were all white and silver (no blue legs) for the Magnus shelf.

While this statement applies to most of the characters, I fail to see how the Hasbro versions of Dinobot and Hotshot are even close to their takara versions.

Henkei is awesome as long as the chrome is done right, some of the Henkei releases are ridicules with their chrome like Galvatron.

Cyclonus I'm really torn, the US version has an awesome shade of purple truly great purple but it has that damn light gray piece of shite plastic that ruins the whole awesomeness of the figure.

We need someone *cough*CP*cough* out there that has both versions to do a pictorial side-by-side of all Henkei/Classics and sticky it. I would really like a sbs of Ratchet/Ratchet and Ironhide/Ironhide.

The galleries here have some, but not all. The only oned that doesn't need to be done are Astrotrain and Cyclonus, cause if you can't tell the difference between the two you shouldn't bother.

Just keep this in mind: the longer you wait, the more expensive they will be. They will never go DOWN in price, only UP.

For example: I got Classics Rodimus on eBay a couple years ago for like $15, shipped. Now it's going for like $50 on eBay. In a couple more years, it'll probably be $100.

So what are you waiting for? Are you expecting win the lottery?
