a few years ago i bought a G1 Optimus Prime from ebay, and while i can tell its not a KO of any kind, i noticed that there is no rub symbol anywhere on it. is it possible that i got a G2 cab with a G1 trailer?

The toy could be a 1983\1984 pre-rub Optimus Prime or the rub symbol could have been removed.
As for it being G2, that would be very easy to spot as G2 Prime is slightly pinker with light blue details. He also has the G2 Autobot logo stamped to the back of his legs.

This is likely the case.

Out of interest, is your G1 Prime deep purple or dark blue?

Definatly not G2. G2 Primes legs were a much lighter blue than that.
http://www.tfu.info/1993/Autobot/Optimu ... sprime.htmThe blue on Prime pretty much matches the blue on roller in these pics.

Let's see if my memory can keep from embarassing me here. My G2 has a slot on the flat part that sticks out of his lower back, where the G1 has no slot. I think it's to mount the speaker box. FWIW

The lack of rub symbol and purple hue combined with the non-bloated fists suggest a pre-rub figure. The rifle is from the second release, and is probably rarer now due to the fact the reissues use the fat-ended rifle from the initial release.
That is, of course, if my memory is serving me well.

That is correct, except Hasbro's 25th Anniversary reissue has the thin rifle. They need to make up their minds

I personally prefer the thin rifle. The "bloated" version looks silly by comparison - it looks like he's holding a torpedo.
