Energon Hot Shot - Mystery Panel?

So the other day I was at a friend's house, playing WFC for the first time (oh how I wish I had a PS3), and I was messing around with his TFs he had in a box. He has a junker Energon Hot Shot. I never bothered getting Hot Shot myself because I didn't like the head mold, and he's pretty awkward-looking.

But anyway, I was transforming him back and forth, and there's this panel underneath the hood which has an Autobot symbol, the part that's connected to his head. I couldn't figure out what it's for, and I still can't even after I looked up the instructions. Seems it's not used in pants or shirt mode either.

Any ideas? Not knowing is killing me, because I'm losing half the battle.

if im reading this right, that panal you are talking about (which should resemble an engine in car mode) is simply there to allow hot shot's head to move between his normal robot mode location to its location for the upper half combined mode

Its Just his engine block, and being on a hinge it allows his head to be rotated through the hood, for robot mode, and the upper torso mode.

It needs to go through, so its on the bottom of the front of the car for Torso Mode, and its through the hood, and over his shoulders for robot mode.

Huh, that's it? I thought because it has an Autobot symbol it's supposed to swivel out in one of the modes, but I guess not. Thanks for the info guys!
