What did you expect, that TakaraTomy would release all new molds every month of the later half year?
I find the end result of the 2010 campaign pleasing to be honest, but I do have two criticisms:
1) The use of MP-4 for Convoy's "Sleep Mode". While I do recognise that the choice was a bit forced, I'd much rather have seen them use the original G1 mold.
2) Predaking. Why is he in there? Sure, he's shiny and all but he could have been a stand-alone Encore release easily.
I find Unicron and the "Sons of Cybertron" concept the strongest points of the campaign (Henkei more than Animated). And the sound base you can order with points collected is a stroke of genius. Primus is somewhere in the middle.
I have to agree. Releasing repaints is a cheap way of celebrating 2010. with the MP roddy coming, I think it took the place of pretty much any new mold we might have gotten.
I think so far the line has been pretty good. with Predaking the only "Huh?" moment of the line.
Don't get me wrong its a great figure, but really they couldn't stick him into a regular Encore slot. I believe he would have been Encore #20.
Every thing else has had a valid reason. Even sleep mode Prime however thin and irrelevant in hind sight it was, its more a lets release this mold a 5th time, (2nd with the trailer) and make some more money off of it. Perhaps a G1 gray prime would have been a cheaper alternative, but I think G1 Primes have now saturated the market. MP still has demand to satisfy.
Now, as I said in another thread, why haven't they "Encored" or "2010 Special Editioned" Hot Rod and/or Rodimus Convoy? The mold is their as evidenced by the prior releases. This is the time to put them out again. I know, Buy an MP Roddy, and we'll throw in a free G1 Hot Rod? How's that for a deal.
