How will Grimstone and the Dinobots be repurposed?

Hey gang, I picked up Smolder and Chopster the other day, and it's a pretty cool set.

Naturally, that got me thinking about the 5 pack Combiner sets I'll probably get someday(though from what I've heard, a wait and see attitude or value pack purchase isn't a bad idea), and that got me thinking about the one pack I WILL buy no matter what: Grimstone and the Dinbots:

Image

I've long had a fascinatino with Dinosaurs, but what kid didn't? While my knowledge has atrophied over the years, the love still exists, and once I got over the dispointment that there wasn't a Steg or Brachi/long neck in the group, I'm very excited that Hasbro isn't using "standard" dinosaurs.

But that brought up yet another thought: how in the heck will Hasbro repurpose these guys? We've already seen that mix and match repaint sets are going to happen with this line, but five Dinosaurs is going to be hard. Nearly any mini-con with the commander is going to be silly looking, unless they go for a Dinoriders homage:

Image

And the limbs? A random dinosaur with a bunch of vehicles will look out of place.

My best guess? The Dinoforce:

Image

Of course, that still calls for the whole set.

So what do you guys think? Has Hasbro created a set of molds with few, if any, repaint possiblities?

If it can't be repurposed into a homage, it can be be repainted as entirely new characters.

At first I was going to say Terrorcons, simply because it would be easy for people to screech "Get over it!" at G1 fans that the Terrorcons would be dinosaurs instead of "monsters". But, given your post, the Dinoforce seems completely and totally appropriate as a repurposed set of these guys.

With that in mind, I say Terrorcons. Dinoforce would make too perfect a degree of sense, and now it'll be easier for people to screech "No one knows who the Dinoforce is!!!!!1" at us.

Repurposed? Isn't that turning toys into different characters than what they're meant to be? :P

Silliness aside, we'd have to wait for another animal-based set to appear, like Predacons or Terrorcons and new two animal 2-packs before we can even start thinking about it. Remember, repaints getting mixed and matched? With that in mind and that the Dinobots will be released in Spring 2011, it's pretty safe to assume they won't be repainted at all, since the third movie will be pretty close by then.

Numerous people were shouting for Dinoking at BotCon.

The designers acted all coy about it.

What is that specific line about?

The Generations releases shown along the PCC's had a tentative release date of Spring 2011 (which was shown on the screen). Plus, the third movie is set for July 1st, 2011 and as I'd expect, the movie toys will come a bit sooner.

I'm looking forward to any release of these guys. I love the PCC, and although a Dimetrodon isn't a dinosaur, I love Dinobots. a Dinoking recolor would be awesome.

D'oh! I forgot about TF3. Before you bring out the torches, know that I do not read spoilers, and rarely get excited about something until I see the trailer.

But after posting, I did consider there could be other animal based PCC's, and I'd love to see new Terrorcons.

Of course, I'd also love to see the Dinosaurs be included alonside some vehicles, mainly for a "What the heck?" type moment.

Personally, I'd do this:

Keep the Dino arms, but keep them kinda greenish.

Repaint PCC Commander Ice Pick into this:

Repaint the Airialbot copter(leg) into this:

Then repaint the Combaticon Jeep into this:

I would never happen, but I LOVED Jurrassic Park toys as a kid, and that would just be so awsome.

So basically, the designers thought the fans had a good idea? Like, they were all like "Man, wish we'd thought of that....." :D

I'm taking it to mean "Hey, that does sound like a good idea. So glad we're doing it."

Means I may not have to repaint it!

I'll probably end up with whatever they decide to repaint them into. Dinoking works for me. Even Monstructor, who's a stretch, works for me.

No idea how they'll reuse the mold, but I'm seriously starting to want this set... but if I buy it, that means I'll have to expand my Dinobots collection beyond Grimlock. I've long since passed on the Animated versions, and as we all know the G1s are expensive. Plus there's the Energon Grimlock/Swoop set, the WSTs...

Someone convince me either way.

If you have to be completist about Dinobots I get that. Energon Grimlock and Swoop are pretty crappy though. Seeing how these aren't the Dinobots you know and love, I wouldn't bother backtracking if you can stand not to. Animated Grimlock and Swoop are fun and Snarl is pretty okay. I have them and enjoy them. The WSTs are fairly easy and inexpensive to get. I have them instead of paying out for the G1 versions. I will eventually but Swoop is my favorite Dinobot and he seems to be the most expensive in good shape so those can wait. I think it all boils to how much you can choke back the collector mentality.

Swoop is so expensive becuase of two reasons:
1-he's the most fragile of the Dinobots. He has thin parts with many joints.
2-he's the Dinobot's flyer. This of course means he got thrown about when kids played with him.

I got quite a bit of money from selling my Swoop because his wings were in perfect condition, which apparently offset his lack of head...

lol, not very well apparently, I'm still compelled to acquire every version of every character I like. You're right about the Energon ones, I've resisted Grimlock thus far, even though I have every other version but the G1. I guess the main ones for Swoop and Sludge/Snarl would be WSTs and Animated, and that's not so hard to do. Huh.

I was compelled to look at some ebay prices for Dinobots, and I came across some ridiculous crap. There is a G1 Grimlock with a buy it now price of $2950.00. If he gets a dumb SOB to buy it for that, then more power to the guy, but that is pretty goofy. It seemed like most of the Dinobots range from $40-$50 to $70-$80. Would that be about right? Or am I a little off?

Seems like eBay's gotten a whole lot more ridiculous since the movies. Now everybody and their grandmother thinks they can get away with insane prices for figures. $40-$80's actually not too bad for a loose complete G1, I guess...

just to counter the prevailing sentiment, this is the one PCC set I will NOT be getting (no really I wont). Just dont care for animalformers after early G1
