I just bought a WFC Soundwave, and I noticed a really deep scratch on the left panel that covers his head in alt mode. It's deep enough that I can actually feel it by touch.

Is there any way I can repair the scratch, or at least make it less noticeable?

With the receipt...take it back and exchange it.

Not an option, unfortunately. I bought that from a hobby store, and where I'm at, hobby stores usually refuse to refund or replace any damaged figures that have been opened. Their excuse is that there's no way to prove that it was defective out of the box, and the customer could have busted it up himself.

It sucks, but that's the way the game's played in these parts.

I have used cutting compound on my TF's to remove deep scratches in the past. I did get mixed results however, so you might want to try it, you might not. If you do, then you may also need to polish it a bit afterwards as well.

I have absolutely no experience with this, but what about using some sort of clear coat?

I was mulling over the idea of using some sort of clear coat, myself. I've heard that it helps to repair scratches and such, but I'm not sure which type to use. Would the usual Tamiya/Mister Color model kit gloss clear coat be any good for scratches?

How many coats should I use?

BTW, would car wax work similarly? It'd make a cheaper alternative if it does work.

If you use a clear coat over the whole part, it may change the finish. Using it or car wax to fill the scratch would work differently by filling in the scratch but not coating the rest of the part, leaving the finish unchanged. However I don't know if car wax will have the same effect on plastic. Best to wait and hear from someone else who knows what they're talking about instead of me.
