I agree. Sunspot is a really good repaint. That flat yellow is fantastic. Hasbro should use more of those flat finishes. I for one am a real fan of garish and/or wild color schemes. I kinda hope they continue with some funky repaints of this mold. It's a great mold and i would buy more for sure. If the colors are crazy enough 8-}

I'm looking forward to pairing him up with the Mindwipe repaint Strafe. Now that will be one garish combination.......can't wait. Sure they're enemies, but whatever.

TFCC exclusive Dion. I don't have it, but I think I might get it if my parents get me the membership I asked for for Christmas. The Hot Shot mould is good aside from the kibble on his shoulders, and it sounds like the problems is mostly fixed by the retooling on the Henkei version. I also think Dion's colour scheme is much more interesting, since there aren't many orange Transformers.

There aren't enough orange TFs. Recently anyway. G1 was packed with them. Oh Wideload, how your inexplicably unremovable blue cargo amused me.

Yeah. I guess I put him for obscurity, but most of the components are actually less-weird. Especially Shuttle Gunner (repaint of Blast Off).

Viper. How many people were waiting for them to make Powerglide into the Rattler? We saw it way back with Tailwind.

I hope they reissue Viper at some point.

What's weirder, the Bruticus repaint, or the fact that you just resurrected a forum that hasn't changed for 9 years  ?

TFCC Depth Charge for me. Although if we take "weird" to mean "obscure" more than "exotic", I'd say Botcon Megaplex. An absolutely amazing mold (from one of my favorite lines) I only experienced through the final Club sale, in colors with great repurposing potential!

This is a great topic, I might use it to field another list.

Personally, I think the best is Prime Dead End.

Also, Black Shadow from TF victory was a retool and repaint of Thunderwing

Gone through the whole topic and not a single mention of him. Gonna fix that:

I always found Universe(2003) Ratchet to be one of the strangest repaints ever made.

Image
Why is he a fire rescue truck? Why is his fire equipment and light bar just tampographed onto the roof? And more importantly why didn't they call him Inferno? I get that they wanted to call him Trailbreaker and accidentally gave the name Inferno to his wave mate, but this is the best they could come up with?

He's such a weird figure, but I do love that bot mode color scheme.

Wow, I didn't know this existed, but the fact that you didn't is even more peculiar. This must be one obscure redeco :-?

Wow, that is just way too much Playskool neon. I get the homage though, but that is probably the winner for weirdest repaint. Might hunt it down though, I kinda like it for some illogical reason.

I wouldn't say obscure, just overlooked. He was part of the main Universe 2003 line, a filler line with straight redecos made to satisfy the sudden increase in demand for toys after Armada's runaway success (in a sense, it's the expanded Robots in Disguise 2001's successor). Emphasis on "straight redeco" as the line had to be rushed, no time for developing new tooling at the time.

And this is where mold degradation started to be evident, Ratchet's accessories were all puffy and mismolded compared to X-Brawn's.

 Thanks, but I don't know all. This line was obscure in Canada though and I admit I don't know it well aside from the Beast Wars repaints.

Well, since it was brought up, here's Ratchet's wave mate "Inferno".

Image

Story goes that they wanted to name the figure Red Alert, but accidentally packaged him with the wrong name and didn't notice before it was too late. Why they wouldn't have just stuck new name correction stickers on the package like we've seen in the past is beyond me. But like JelZe said, this line was rushed to the market and full of weird stuff anyway. I do love those clear blue flames, though.

This guy, I knew of. He is much less odd a repaint than ratchet to me simply because a lamborghini repainted into a red alert looking toy sounds par for the course. Didnt know about the name though, I always thought that was Red Alert.

I didn't think name corrections/changes were a thing back then. The original Cybertron Defense Red Alert was just called "Red Alert" on initial shipping, with the printed name corrected for later shipments. Even then, they would seem to be reserved for exceptional, PR-destroying situations:

- PCC Over-Run, originally called, wait for it... "Spastic" 8-} . Package was printed, name was known to the public, public outcry. Name was changed via stickers.
- A bit lesser this one, TR Brainstorm as part of the Titan Force set, got a name change in the UK thanks to the trademark for an actual company located there, Brainstorm Limited. He was renamed Charon there, again via stickers. The import was done via a local licensee if I may add, not via Hasbro UK.
