Any hints or tips on this? Anyone had any success with oil or diet coke or any other typical way to remove rust?

I'll ask the wife on this one as it seems to be a universal issue with Micromasters. She's a chemical engineer and builds systems where this kind of thing is commonly dealt with.

I appreciate it. I can live with it if there is simply nothing to do about it, but want to know for sure.
Especially bad on the "warehouse find" sealed silver card micromaster teams that all the online sellers had an abundance of for a time recently (hotrod patrol, monster truck patrol and military patrol) where it actually looks white and rough with flecks of brown in the wheel well. Monster truck patrol seems to get the worst of it.
Others have typical brown rust on metal wheel wells in varying degrees but those recent sealed sets that flooded the market seem especially bad as they are coming from an MOC state with rust (or something) already.
nothing to do with my display room which is temperature and moisture controlled with UV coatings on all the windows and full blackout shades just to be sure.

WD-40 and Q-tips work for me.
