http://www.tfu.info/2011/Autobot/Jazz/jazz.htmThis pic of Jazz serves as reference. Been wanting to know since my first Japanese robot figure. That protrusion under his mouth. Gundam has it (colored red), Brave Raydeen, Ultra Magnus, G1 Jazz has a slightly elevated one, Superion ......heck even Bruticus though he's got a flat face plate.

@ Flux Convoy,
This ain't trolling. It's a different subject FYI. The previous question I raised was the seemingly different sizing despite the vehicle modes being the same size.
You did check the reference picture right? Or read the question? My response to your response if you didn't read the gist of the question is the now immortal lines Megatron said to Starscream after the massacre at he Autobot shuttle.
Btw, do you know the answer?
Check Jazz's face pic at the link.
That extra protrusion in his chin. Amelie got that right (though G1 Bruticus' face is flat so the chin reference might be off) but in other Japanese robots they have that.............thing.

Yeah, I checked the pic. It's a chin for all intents and purposes. I'm sure he doesn't store gumballs in it. They're robots, they don't necessarily have to have human facial traits. Jazz certainly doesn't have eyes like a human. I dunno, these questions are silly to me. Like you're just screwing around.

Okay. For you it's silly. For me, well it ain't.That's why I raised it. I want to know (trivial as it may seem)hence trivia.
Seems like you woke up at the wrong side of the CR chamber.
I wasn't even asking whether Jazz had human eyes. I was refering to that thing on his chin. That thing on his eyes/optics btw a "visor". So that feature has an actual word in describing it.So suddenly you're refering to his eyes?
A silly question/ screwball question would be "where does Optimus' trailer go to when he transforms?" Or why does Megatron shrink from his robot gigantic size?
Back from the "flame". A lot of Japanese super robots (especially with a humanoid face) with exception to the chogokin female robots (Minerva X, Venus A and Diana A have none of these protrusions on their "chins").
Now if you reference the TFA figs, those are whan you can honest to goodness call "CHINS". Starscream especially.

Note:
Not a double post so I won't be accused of re-editting the previous.
What was the sound of the Transformers emits during their transformations?

See, prior to 2006, we just chalk it to "sound effects". Now it's called "robot pulsing". Silliness? Well, trivia pursuit wise, now we know.........

I know what a visor is. I think that common sense would maybe answer your questions for you. I was pointing out that obviously these aren't humans, they have bits that probably don't make sense. I don't know where "robot pulsing" came from, but Google yields no results. If I felt you were flaming me, I wouldn't even be reading this or responding to it.

The Japanese like to draw their robots with that kind of chin. But that's what it is.
Just like G1 Silverbolt's full pouty lips, these things don't always make sence if you think about it too deeply. It's just a style thing.

it's a robot soul patch!
and i find it particularly confusing when robots with mouth-guards (like Optimus Prime or Soundwave) have them. Lots of Gundam and their kin seem to have this.

"Robot pulsing" is a term used in the 1986 Transformer Movie to describe the transformation sound by both factions. It's described as in the "captions" option of the DVD.
@ craggy.
You get my point. Thanks. I know it may sound trivial but yeah, I'd like to know what that thing really is officially called........robot soul patch would be nice...........only too long.

Bout what I was going to say. Maybe it's influenced by Samuari designs as well?
Also, back in the days of Dreamwave Ongoing, nearly EVERYONE was wearing one of those goatee's, probably cause it "looked cool"

.

Yeah. In both animation and the toy designs. that stub is always present. Heck you can also check henkei/classic Skyfire/Jetfire's helmet. It also has that. Btw, a helmet's supposed to have a "chin"?

In Egyptian culture a beard was a symbol of god-like power and pharoahs wore them to signify their status. Perhaps they are on robots as a symbol of power?
Personally I think they are there to just look cool. There are only so many variations of faceplates, frowns and smirks before all the robot faces start to look the same.
Here is a site related to this topic:

Most prominent is in Reideen the Brave. So in your opinion that's a form of "robo beard"? Like Wreck-gar's and Scourge?

If it's got a faceplate to go with it, yeah. Like this one:

To be fair, that's really the only image I can find with anything close to looking like a beard. Most faceplates just have normal looking chins. So again, artistic and aesthetic choice really.

Why has no-one mentioned the chins in Animated?

I did mention the chins. Those are "the CHINS". Its the thing that protrudes from it that I raised an issue off.
Btw, Voyager Prime of TFA has that thing too, like Gundam's, only blue.

We could probably speculate Cybertronian custom on why they have those things on their chin in robot mode. Style. Rank and power. Declaration of age. Armor(maybe some of them have tin chins).
But uh, what about the lovable Dinobot Sludge?
He's a rebel...without a thought.
I never had the figure as a kid, and had no idea he had that beast beard until I saw it him drawn toy accurate in a great Mosaic.
And for the record, Guiltor's got a beard too. Ah yeah

Jazz was trying for a Wreck-Gar goatee and left his trimming guard in place by accident.

The face guards like OP and Soundwave definitely have a ninja feel. The "thing" that this discussion is talking about looks to me just like a Japanese goatee. So I'm with the reference to the pharaohs beard idea. I also seem to remember some Japanese helmets having a similar chin guard, but I cannot find a picture.

in one series of gundam (cant remember which) they played a part in comunication.
i think they are purely a style oriented aesthetic used to break up otherwise bland features, possibly based off the egyption "power beard" as other poster have surmmised. ive always meant to grow one of those...
i have always just called them chin guards or chin-kibble.
foe the record i think they look cool...
