Hear me out. Let's go through the list of Primes.
G1 Diaclone mold = Prime 1
Powermaster Optimus = Prime 2
ActionMaster Optimus = Prime 3
G2 Diaclone mold = Prime 1 again
G2 Hero Optimus = Prime 4
G2 Laser Optimus = Prime 5
G2 Gobot Optimus = Prime 6
BW Bat Optimus = Prime 7
New Beast wars Prime = Prime 8
Prime 8 = Primate.
They were making a new show with Beast Transformers and had to decide what to make him, so they just did the math.
Discuss.

You are giving those guys at Hasbro a lot of credit for insight. Things did seen to be a lot different back then though, you may be right.

There's a few Primes missing from that list. Prime Eight would have been a good name though.
EDIT: Post #2000!

You forgot Machine Wars Optimus Prime, Decoy Optimus Prime, Star Convoy

Pair him with T-Rex Megatron, transform them to beast mode, watch the King Kong movie, act out some scenes with the toys, then come back to us.
And Bat Primal is an homage to Batman, another toyline which Kenner (the actual company behind Beast Wars, under Hasbro) was producing at the time. That's all I have to say.

Did Machine Wars Prime come out before BW Primal? I didn't think he did, but I could be wrong. As for the decoy, that's just a rubber G1 Prime, not a new version of Prime. And Star Convoy was never released as "Optimus Prime". Which is why I put PMOP on the list, but not Ginrai.
Seriously though, this thread is not serious. It was just some odd thing I noticed when counting the Optimus toys through their release. I posted it for kicks and giggles.

Interesting thought. I kind of want to do some research on it.
One thing to keep in mind is that is responsible for the creation of the Beast Wars. They are the ones that designed Optimus Primal.
With a different crew in mind, I'm not sure if they thought that out, but it is cool to consider.
Also, Machine Wars Prime did come out after Optimus Primal. He came out like year later or something like that.

I think the Machine Wars line came out about the same time the first BW figures hit. When they released MW Optimus is beyond my knowledge.

I believe MW was released after the initial success of Beast Wars. It was more like experiment to see if kids would still buy vehicle mode Transformers. Smart idea, were it not for the simple decos of the Flipchangers and outdated molds for the larger toys.

I don't think it was so much the outdated molds as that it had bad distribution. Kay Bee exclusive madeit difficult to obtain. The experiment failed in that kids couldn't really get the figures easily since they weren't found at Walmart and Target and other mass distribution stores.
I only ended up with a couple while a kid and then bought the complete set a couple years ago. I remember as a kid loving the line as wanted them to go back to cars instead of beasts. 15 years later, I find myself wanting them to go back to beasts. (Funny how that works)
They're still an amazing set of figures.

thankyou for trying to bring humour. I for one found it mildly enjoyable. Somewhat sad that we have serious discussion on the topic, actually.

Why? at the end of his post he said to discuss. Besides, this is a discussion board. A land where mundane things are serious business.

Maybe I wanted you to discuss the humor? Talk about how funny it is that the 8th Prime was a Prime-8?

I for one would like to thank you for an awesome comment. It's way funnier than the first post. The first post was smarter, though.
Prime-8. I always wondered why HasTak didn't make him in to a lion in the first place.

I'm gonna have to SECOND this idea as I agree with it.

I always blamed Kaybee as the main reason the MW molds sold poorly.
Kaybee always lacked the high volume customers traffic in the stores compared to target, walmart, kmart, toys r us,etc...
Kaybee sold newer toys at a much higher prices than it's competitors.
