I was looking into getting my sister a few G1 toys for her graduation, but I'm rather clueless when it comes to these old fashioned things #-o

I discovered they tend to be missing pieces, but some also seem to come with sticker sheets. I was looking at a few Optimus's dispersed across the web and found some had the decals on the outside of the trailer and some didn't... did Optimus originally come blank and the sticker sheets were in the packaging? Or... were those something you had to get separate? I'd rather not spend a lot getting the toy and then have to spend an extra bunch getting stickers

If you bought them new or mint in box the sticker sheets came in the box with them. Buying one loose may or may not have the stickers. You just need to inquire about it to the seller if you plan to buy one loose somewhere.

Try looking for the Encore version.

That would be the best option, or Hasbro's 25th Anniversary Optimus Prime which might be somewhat cheaper than the Encore version.

The only thing is that the toy itself has different colors than the original.

If complete original stickers are not so important you could look into Reprolabels.com. They sell reproductions of many G1 sticker sheets, without the vintage price.

Also, to clarify, most G1 toys came with some of the stickers already applied, the rest were on a sheet and you had to apply them yourself.. In Optimus Prime's case, the stickers on the outsides of the trailer were pre-applied, and I believe the silver stripes on the truck mode. The rest were on a sheet.

If you're seeing G1 Optimus Primes in boxes with no decals on the trailers, you're looking at knock offs. No official release of that Prime mold has EVER come without stickers pre-applied to the outside of the trailer. http://cgi.ebay.com/NIB-Transformers-G1 ... 2c5d0725a5
That right there is a good deal, the seller has perfect feedback, it's an official Japanese reissue and it's a very good price.

I second Flux. KO even have the factory labels not applied. Encore may cost a bit the most nearly accurate version from the 80s.
