I was thinking about doing this for some more shelf space.
Any particular way to go about this?

What do you mean? How to store them or how to select whom to store?

Well ... bot modes take up more space than the vehicle modes... so yeah. Before i got shelves i kept all my tfs in vehicle mode and just stuffed them all into a shelf in my cupboard on top of each other. Big ones at the bottom, deluxes at the top

I mean how to store them, not really whom to put away.
I already know who's getting bumped.

Me personaly i store them in alt mode wrapped in either bubble wrap or tissue neatly side by side cars on the bottom and bigger ones like planes on top in a decent size plastic storage box away from sunlight..
I would never store them in robot mode to much room needed for storage and even worse the suprise to later find bits have have snapped off.

I had read some time ago that storing loose TFs with newspaper is not good...is it boxed or boxless? I have several plastic tubs that I'm using to store TFs just for keeping them out of the way since I just can't display them like I want to at this time. So some of the tubs have popcorn styro in them, wiil they get damage from this?
I read in this topic that keeping them in alt mode allows more storage space. I thought of using storage bags for each one and putting them into tubs with the idea of getting to them if I want to. Is this harmless or is there a better way? All tips and ideas needed, thanks!

Bubble wrap. If you love them, you'll pay for it.

I'd pack them all in vehicle mode, and it couldn't hurt to use bubble wrap, or at least tissue paper or something to prevent them from directly touching each other. More importantly, make sure that you store them in areas where they won't be exposed to extreme temperatures, especially heat.

Transforming everything to vechicle mode can be a headache. especially if some stuff is overly complicated in the transformation. then their's the super headache & time of transforing stuff back to robot mode when putting them back on display shelves.
I'd reccommend buying big plastic totes or big card board boxes. then putting the TF toys in the box/totes in robot modes.
If you no longer have the instructions nor boxes then some stuff like the alternators/BT,Movie verse toys,cr/rid,bwneo CAN Literally take hours to transform back & forth. your only real option would resort to watching u-tube TF Toy transformations reviews.

I ran out of space long ago and I've just resorted to storing my figures in large cardboard Xerox paper boxes that my dad gets from his job. He's a civil engineer, so apparently they go through loads on paper weekly. I put the figures in the boxes primarily in vehicle mode. However, as someone earlier pointed out, some figures can take a very long time to get back in vehicle mode, so I just leave them in bot mode. I line the box with old shirts and do a layer of bots then a soft shirt or towel, then another layer of bots, another layer of a shirt/towel and so on. It's worked well for the past few years.

i store mine in ziplock bags and put them in large plastic containers in my closet, the ziplock bags do well to keep all the accesories together

Excellent point and all other suggestions too! Anyone try with styrofoam popcorn/peanuts?
