Hello all I'm new to the transformer world, I've recently decided to invest in Transformers and other collectible toys. Some of you vets out there what would be your suggestions on this? My main concern is learning about whats hot and whats not and to develop a comprehensive price guide.

Welcome :D. What's hot? Generations and RTS. As they homage G1, or the original transformers designs from 1985. I sugesst you pick up scourge and wheeljack from generations. Or some RTS (besides fallback or mindset). These are a good start, (and possibly gain a higher value in the near future  )

1. There is no "comprehensive price guide" when it comes to figures that are no longer sold at retail. In the age of the internet, prices are fluid and change from minute to minute depending on who's selling and who's buying.

2. If you see a figure you want, buy it. You might be tempted to wait for a figure to go on sale, but you run the risk of missing the opportunity to buy it at retail, and then the price will go up as you have to resort to buying from a reseller. And once a figure is no longer at retail, the price will just keep going up.

Welcome to the boards! Like the past two posters said pretty much said what I would have said. There will be some rare and hard to find figs out there and usually I would buy those if I find them. You'll also notice figs that are 'shelf warmers' cause there are just too many of them and not enough ppl buying that certain one. Go after the ones that appeal to you. TF collecting can be pretty expensive depending on which way you want to go. Some fans will collect only certain lines while others will collect everything. Me personaly, I'm focusing on the Generations/RTS line and DOTM line. I will buy everything from the Generations/RTS line that I find but only get certain ones from the other. I love the G1 era and anything that comes out that resembles a character from that era will be bought and put into my collection. Have fun collecting and hunting!

Kind of what is said here. I'd first decide some things......
1. how much room do you have for them? Could determine the amount you collect?
2. do you want a certain line of Transformers or mix n match?

And then look back on here and see some reviews of ones your interested in. Good luck.

Welcome to Siebertron. I got into toy collecting for the money when I was 10 years old. And what that got me was a room full of Star Wars stuff that I can't sell because it's not hot anymore. But you can make a few dollars here and there so it's not impossible, just not worth the time. I changed my mindset and now open most of what I have just to display and think back about my childhood.

Rule 1. If it's new and hot sell it NOW
Rule 2. Reread rule 1.

And to add to this, and it has to be said:

Rule 3: Do not, I repeat do NOT buy every single hot toy in every store you see. Kids, parents and especially the fans will hate you for it.

I saw that happen this weekend. Listening to a guy on his phone talk to somebody about which stores they were going to go to next. The Warpath wave has been stocked around here. So he had 3 each of Tcracker, WP, and Ratchet. He walked around the corner for a minute and I took some of his. That might be wrong to some people but that's what I was there looking for and I've been in this too long to just watch him walk away with everything.

Yeah, the ppl who go into the stores and buy every hot item sucks to me. Cause I'm in it for collecting and having fun. I don't make money off of my stuff unless I have to for whatever reason. It makes it really hard to complete a line when I can never find it in stores due to the ones who buy them up for profit.

If he hadn't yet paid for them, then they weren't his. ;) I would have done the same thing in that situation. Nobody needs 3 of each figure unless they're scalping them. It's not like you were taking a toy from a child.

Hello, I hope you stick around for a while and find that Transformers are awesome and become a fan. After all, there are much better things to invest your money in than toys.

Before you know it, you will be ripping open packages when you find that toy you have been searching for and would never even dream of selling anything unless you absolutely had to.
