An in-hand image of the Japan exclusive Dark Steel figure has surfaced via
eBay. The figure is an homage to
Beast Wars Quickstrike, and uses
DOTM Deluxe Sideswipe as a base with a retooled head and retooled weapons from
DOTM Deluxe Starscream. This figure will be released in Japan as a Bic Camera store exclusive, luckily a version will also be available domestically later this year as part of the DOTM line under the name Dark Iron. Check out the image mirrored below.

Actually, the sollicited name for the TakaraTomy version already was Dark Steel, Dark Iron was the proposed name for the Hasbro version.

I don't really think that the homage comes out very clear

It's mostly in the colors, the retooled head and the blades looking like snake fangs.

Actually looks more like Beast Machines Quickstrike to me.
On a related note, is this mold any good?

How is that, in any way, an homage to BW Quickstrike? I don't see any similarities aside from them sharing one color in common.

Which Quickstrike was this supposed to be like...
This one,

or this one?

Honestly, Dark Iron/Steel doesn't look like either in vehicle mode... Just sayin...

Aside from the colors, the head sculpt (from the images I've seen anyway) look a lot like BW Quickstrike.
I really like this figure. The colors are awesome and the weapons actually look good (I get the reference to the weapons looking like snake fangs). I really wanted an excuse to pick up Sideswipe's convertible mold, and this is the perfect reason to get it. Bought on sight.

This doesn't interest me since I never even knew Beast Wars/Machines existed until a few years ago when I got back into Transformers. The only thing that annoys me about this is the fact that they can clearly use a bunch of paint apps for this character, but not for the character he shares a mold with? Who actually appears in the movie?? I was hoping for another Swerve repaint myself.

And I said "proposed", both versions are called "Dark Steel", except Hasbro's is one word: "Darksteel"

I still say the blades look like snake fangs.

That's a pretty weak connection; hardly an "homage".

Just dug through some SDCC images, Hasbro had him labeled as Dark Steel in their slide show as well. Whatever he ends up being called he's on my must have list.

are you really supposed to pronounce it AN HOMAGE? Iv'e always had issues with that...
Anyway, Giant snakescorpion thingy doesnt translate well into modern day stealth disguises, but a corvette stingray on the otherhand, I mean, come on, they could have givin him torpedo blasters and a blue and yellow paint job and spun off the name "Depthcharge" and since he's a "Stingray" and has "wings" he could have had less backlash then this...
custom idea. credit to me.

Yup, and should be the same toy. The same thing was done with RotF Deluxe Dead End and Stalker Scorponok: general retail in the US, but exclusive in Japan.

I like the mold although it has it's shortcomings (Flintstone mobile anyone?), but i'd just like a silver repaint instead of this God awful mix of colours.

I can see a homage in face and colour with BW Quickstrike but im missing the link between names here.
This guy is very cool and is a must have.

Although at first I wasn't sure about this, I'm sold on it by now. I don't like the name much though. I'll just call him Quickstrike.
