so should i get the G1 or the transformers Prime...... >:oP

It's a matter of taste, really. Keep in mind that G1 is best enjoyed with appreceation for restrictions of 80's toys in general.

Why do you want to collect the toys? What attracts you to them?

The answer will affect what toys line(s) you should collect.

A lot of people collect lots of different lines. For me it's less about the line and more about the specific figure. There are certain lines I'm more attracted to than others (I love the Power Core Combiners and Titanium Heroes lines but almost indiscriminately dislike the movie line), but there are figures I own or want from G1, G2, Unicron Trilogy, Beast Wars and other lines too. Really it's more about the characters you like and the quality of the figures than it is about which line they're from.

That's my opinion anyway. Obviously every collector has his or her own style, their own favourites and pet hates; they may enjoy completing a particular line regardless of whether or not they like the figures, or they might just want to collect everything that's new. It's a totally individual thing, you just gotta find what works for you.

Advice-wise, there are more G1 figures that I like than there are movie ones, but to enjoy G1 toys I think you need to either have a love for the characters or an appreciation for the charm of 80's quality toys. If you're looking for articulation and features and stuff, go for the movie and Prime lines (actually the Prime line looks pretty sweet so far, so I'd go for that).

Get whatever you want, whatever appeals to you. Build a collection based on what YOU will enjoy, not what you think other collectors would enjoy.

Ask yourself this: If you have $100 to spend, what would you rather get for that $100? One good G1 figure, or 5-8 new Prime figures?

First ask yourself "why do I want to collect?" If your answer is "To sell them years later on for a rainy day, they'll be my retirement fund", don't. The profits made is very meager, if any, and knowledgeable buyers will always look elsewhere ;)

*ahem* I collect the toys partially out of nostalgia, partially out of fascination for the engineering involved in the toys. Plus, what's not to love about sapient transforming robots  My fascination doesn't end with engineering, also the many different styles and experimental lines (if executed well) catch my attention. I'm a Jill of all trades :P

My favourite characters? G1 Wheeljack, G1 Tracks, and RotF Sideswipe.

well I really agree with you about for the love of the 80's quality and the characters, so I might Buy just one Ironhide G1 or Optimus G1, also Transformers prime also pretty well design so I might go for that

If you do have some figures from G1 that are attractive to you, you can search for their updated versions through the Classics, Henkei, Universe, Reveal the Shield and Generations lines. I never had Kup, Blurr, or Thunderwing from G1, but I bought the newer versions because I thought they were cool toys and characters even back then, and now, the superior engineering makes some of them even more character-accurate. So definitely check that stuff out if you're looking to collect a few choice G1 pieces.

I noticed you mentioned buying G1 Ironhide. If so, I recommend getting the third party clip on head set for him and Ratchet. I had Ratchet as a kid and wouldn't even consider Ironhide because he had no head despite him being one of my favourite charaters.

I picked up this set for Ratchet and not long after, I finally bought Ironhide. G1 Ironhide has gone on to be one of my favourite toys because I feel the head complements the toy so well.

At the end of the day, it's your choice, I just thought I'd offer some advice based on my own experience. Here's a link for the set currently on Ebay.
