I have caught the G1 bug!

I have been aquiring from the vintage line over the last several years but my interest has gone in in full swing the last 2. This is largely due to a couple local shops selling vintage figures. Which is nice cuz now I have become good friends with an owner of one such store so he gives me the "homey hook up" and gives me first dibs on any new aquires

I have noticed though that I tend to be more interested in the later G1 era, (post diaclone and microchage figures). Something about those later figures really appeals to me. The bots feel chunkier and more durable. It also feels like the line really started to develop its own personality when Hasbro and Takara began collaborating together on figures.

Anyone else have this preference?

Depends on my mood, I guess. Though when it comes down to it, I do like G1 figures and the likes (Generations) more than 'new' characters.

Headmasters and Targetmasters are some of my favs. I really enjoy my Mosterbots too. The Pretenders are cool, if your looking for something different.

I would love to own the big dudes, Trypticon, Skorponok, Metroplex and Fort Max. but those pricey figs will be something I will have to aquire over time. I do have Sixshot, PM Prime and Omega Supreme so I can check those off the list.

I am also waiting on both sets of the Autobot and Decepticon clones that I just recently got for a pretty sweet deal on ebay. They are clean and crispy too, supposedly never been played with just collector owned (i love getting those)

I do love the later G1 too, but I also love the early G1 too. I'm also a fan of the silly looking Super Gobots, with the car cabins for a head.

What I got are Reissue Optimus Prime, with modded smostacks, Original Hound and Targetmaster Hotrod, and reissue Starscream.
But the later G1 is where it really shine. The recent BBTS Exclusive Seacon set is a must have.
I also have a complete original Doubledealer. Get him, he's awesome.
But the one you MUST ABSELUTELY have is God Ginrai. I got that reissue complete, without the box, and it's one of my favorite TF ever, all generations combined. There's so much you can do with him!
Hmmm... Guess I like the later G1 more, I guess.

Oh, while I think about it, I recently got Universe King Atlas. Even if that repaint is from 2000something, he's based on a G1 mold. So he kinda count as a latest (very latest) G1 figure! And I like him.

There was something about the later years ... even though it was pretty much the introduction of "gimmicks" which I loathe.

That's where i'm pretty much concentrating now as I have all the early year stuff, just have to round out the Masters and Pretenders and a few Micros.

I totally forgot about mine! yes I do own him

I cant believe I forgot about one of my most prized pieces. After getting PM Prime I had to own it. Whats cooler is that I got it for $40 at a con, with box and unstickered! I love that chromey behemoth!

I kinda enjoy the gimmicks ;)

You can definitely see the new direction they were taking the line with the '86 movie toys. And I sure wish they used the same quality of plastic today!

G1 gimmicks weren't bad as they didn't really impact on the figures themselves (unlike later generations).

I think that's what sets G1 apart from all the other generations (aside from being the original) is that it had such a large number of characters and all sorts of gimmicks. These days? The gimmick pretty much encompasses an entire line and the characters are limited.

But G1? You need shelves and shelves for all of them (I think I'm up to about six?) and nearly every single one of them are unique and individual characters.

I much prefer the earlier G1 stuff, when Transformers were actualy 'robots in disguise'. With a few exceptions, I have almost no interest in Pretenders, Head Masters, Power Masters etc. As somebody already mentioned they're just a bit to gimmicky, only IMHO of course. ;)

I totally agree, Back then they didnt have the articulation so it seems they made up for it with clever gimmics (for that era)

As for shelf space, I just got done setting up the Nerdcave a month or so ago in the new house and I am already out of wall and bookcase space! I have a spot reserved for a Detolf that I hope to get someday but thats bout it.

The vintage figs do display well alongside modern figures though, I like to pepper G1 figs on my Masterpiece shelves

Yeah i'm effectively out of space and that's everything from G1 up to Animated. No room for movie or Prime stuff.

The movie stuff you can do without, and as for animated...I packed those up long ago to make room

except for arcee, blurr and grimlock. They make great stand ins for thier characters with the classics.

Do you have a favorite G1? mines gotta be Sixshot, he has alot of fun factor.

I do have a mild obsession with Stalker, because at the time he was (and still is) one of the better tank TF's.

But I guess the major favourite would be Ultra Magnus, which is why he has his own shelf. Although Prime has his own cabinet.

oh my favorite is gotta be g1 soundwave, when i got mine it was in mint condition and i rocked him in my belt for about 6 months. i coulnt put the toy down, i would always swap the cassettes out every day and i would keep my change in the battery cover. **** awesome toy. but tracks and megs have gotta be close.

When I was little, I used to love the accurate Diaclone / Micro Change-era molds: the accuracy of alt modes were what it was all about for me. My parents didn't mind the toys so much, but they did not want me to see the Transformers cartoon on TV (likewise with GI JOE or the A-Team, BTW), so I never really got into the characters back then.
Back then, I hated the later G1 toys which came out after the source of Diaclone / Micro Changemolds had run dry. The weird blocky fantasy alt modes looked horrible, in my opinion, so I stopped with collecting (= asking for Christmas/birthdays, back then) Transformers altogether.

Nowadays, however, I have come to really appreciate those later (post-1986) Transformers, and have been collecting them over the last couple of years, moreso than the earlier G1 season 1 / season 2 Transformers. I love the Headmasters and really appreciate the Pretenders too. Still kind of draw a line at Actionmasters, though (although I do own a MOC Mainframe to at least own one Actionmaster).

These bunch o' bricks really blows away the competition!

Despite their limited articulation, they have a charm that the others can't seem to replicate (or at least a few in the modern era could which I can count with both my hands, even the market forces attest to that with examples of RTS Windcharger, Rumble and Frenzy, Soundwave.......)And the gimmicks like the decoder, decal application, gestalt's,"masters", Pretenders.......

So far, the only thing that weighs an anchor on its neck is:

1. Price in the 2ndary market( finding one at a decent price is like going through a needle in the haystack).
2. K.O.s
3. Yellowing and GPS

I love G1. That's what I grew up on. I limit my buying to characters that appeared in the US show and characters I owned growing up.

Yup. I've caught the G1 bug all right. Multiple in fact.
5 G1 Insecticons to be more precices.

And to be totally honest, they are all 3$ knock-off. I'll show them off in the appropriate forum.

Your micromasters would love a Starconvoy.

the micromaster line is one that I have yet to own or to be truly interested in? is there some you could suggest?

Although, that micromaster Hot Rod is a big seller for that Star Convoy set. I have always been a sucker for big chunky robots and Hot Rods, so its a win-win situation
