Mine came in the mail from Amazon today, and I noticed a gap under the nose cone revealing some strange translucent orange plastic. So my question is, is that gap supposed to be there, or am I missing a piece?

It's meant to be like that. See the grooves in the clear orange piece? that's how the automorph works.
