a peg on his roof/back? I know you can stick the hammer on it but wouldn't it have been easier/cheaper to just make a hole instead since the hammer already has a peg?

Maybe the peg was originally intended for something else.

Look no further than the light-up feature of the Star Hammer playset.

JelZe's right. The Cyberverse Commanders have the function to plug light-up nozzles from the playsets on translucent pegs somewhere on the figure (usually the back) and make it "glow" with "Energon." Kind of like the Powerizer gimmick.

It's really annoying.

The pegs also provide for some nice weapon storage, can't speak for Ultra Magnus personally, but there's probably a peghole on the hammer somewhere, right?

I'm sure there is. There usually is. I can only honestly speak for Ironhide, being my only Cyberverse Commander, but I know the other commanders have pegs and pegholes. Never bothered watching the Magnus review.
