So I was going through storage and run across two Blaster's I have. So i took them out and of course played with them for a minute or two then noticed something odd. One has a back plate while the other doesn't. Has anyone else noticed this? And is this normal for the G1 toy?

That's a common variation to the mold. It's actually a left-over from his Microman heritage, where he could store a Mini-Cassette. The front could not hold a Cassette, rather it was meant for a plug-in radio, with the toy acting as the speaker.

And it's not a battery compartment, that was in the right leg. Speaking of legs, the left one had a functional headphone jack.
