That's a common variation to the mold. It's actually a left-over from his Microman heritage, where he could store a Mini-Cassette. The front could not hold a Cassette, rather it was meant for a plug-in radio, with the toy acting as the speaker.
And it's not a battery compartment, that was in the right leg. Speaking of legs, the left one had a functional headphone jack.
