Kitbashing? Is it worth it?

I am plagued with indecision. Over the next couple of weeks I plan to fill the gaps in my Binaltech collection (which only requires Wheeljack, Prowl and Skids, maybe buy Asterisk Sunstreaker too), but I'm unsure about what to do next.

How do you guys feel about kitbashing expensive collectibles like the Binaltechs? The reason I ask this is I would really prefer BT Prowl to be a Subaru, not the Honda. Should I buy BT Prowl and BTA Alert and start swapping heads, repainting arms etc.? It's a lot of money to spend on something that you might ruin if you mess up the kitbash. Plus I'll have packaging for a BT Honda Integra Prowl when I've gone and made a BTA Subaru Impreza Prowl! And packaging for a BTA Subaru Impreza Alert when I've gone and made a BT Honda Integra Alert! (if you follow me!)

Maybe I should really go nuts and buy two of each, that way I can have the factory original with packaging and have the fan-made kitbash figures that suit my personal preferences?

I kitbash alt/bts as I like to improve the figures.

Here's a list of what I've done so far...

Alt Wheeljack -> Wheeljack (G1 style reprolabels added blue seats & waist replaced with red parts from Grimlock)

Alt Wheeljack -> Slicer (Blue/white origonal colour scheme with copper details on head to resemble G1 Slicer, a repaint of action master whjeeljack.)

Alt Rollbar -> Tantrum (reprolabels based on G1 Tantrum added)

Alt Grimlock -> Camshaft (Blue seats and waist from Wheeljack, silver details painted on head,)

...and what I'm planning to do next:

BT Prowl (blue) -> Nightbeat (reprolabels, repainting and repainted alt Sideswipe head)

alt Prowl -> Red Alert (reprolabels and repainted alt sideswipe head)

BTa Alert -> Prowl (reprolabels and alt Prowl head)

Zoom Zoom (red Meister) -> Cliffjumper (by giving him Alert's head)

alt Nemesis Prime -> Trailbreaker (reprolabels and swindle head)

Yeah, pictures would be very helpful! I like the idea of swapping the blue pieces of Wheeljack for Grimlock's red pieces, but then my figures won't be original. Hmm. Maybe I'm too anal to be a kitbasher!! :P

No. :P

At some point I will eventually get around to taking some pictures once all the projects are finished.
I'm a bit anal about my kitbashes, but in a different way. I'm trying to get all the origonal figures my alts/bts are based on, to photograph next to them. At the moment I still need to find a reasonably priced Trailbreaker and Nightbeat.
Until then the pics on reprolabels will have to do for you.

Also I'm trying to decide what to do with Battle Ravage. Once Argos pull their fingers out and get Ravage in stock, I'll want to do something with Battle Ravage. Perhaps turn him into BW Ravage or the Brestforce character, Jaruga.

Damn, beat me to it.

Who cares about the originals? We know what they look like.
Make with the posting! In fact, I know a good site you can post them on and link to 8)

the major question that you need to ask yourself is this situation is not whether it is worth it, but whether you have the skillz and resources to make it worthwhile.

for me, if i were to attempt something like this, i know the results would be disasterous. but for other people, their tfs turn out more than awesome. if you don't have the skillz but do have the resources, a better route would be to commission a customizer to help you out.

I don't think I have the skills

Anyone know any customizers then?

Always wanted to do some kitbashing. I've had loads of ideas, I'd especially like to do Cybertron modes of lots of the Beast Wars characters. I'm too damn scared to though! I'm pretty sure I ain't got the necessary talent to pull it off and I really don't wanna waste my hard earned money by ruining some figs!

Should someone maybe restart the Kitbashing thread then? I remember it to be very good! Obviously I can't start it...

There's an entire forum thread further down the main forum listing page.
