Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! Heartbreaks of owning G1 figs

:BANG_HEAD:
:BOOM:

Nothing lasts forever! Already expected that but when it sucker punches you in the gut.......... :HEADHURTS:

I live somewhere in SEA and own quite a few TF g1. I don't have pairs so one of each thus I take very god care of them. Not MISB but displayed in a cabinet case in a rom that is on A/C at least 8 hours a day.
Well just yesterday, thanks to the Shout dvd Masterforce, did a little role playing with my re-issue Godginrai. To my horror, just transformed the cab part to Ginrai (the right leg down to his foot shattered. Just like that! No stress marks, nothing........just folded it up then BOOM!

So lesson learned(and to all those who keep your figs in MISB too), these vintage guys are meant to be just seen and not touched anymore........... :BANG_HEAD:

In addition, for those who own a G1 Shockwave (those not in MISB), obviously you don't leave the 9v batteries in the fig but also, if prolonged disuse, well the terminals also give way. Mine is kind of on the fritz on the sound department (the bulb is dead already) but a little WD-40 and the sound sort off went online again.

Just ventilating..........

Luckily, you can replace that particular reissue with another reissue for a reasonable price right now.

No choice kimosabe. Done. Just picked up the hasbro version (difference is that the wheels are now riveted). Now my disabled "Ginrai" is now forever in "double on" mode ala "Victory"

Sweet Primus! How the heck can you tell the plastics are ready to give in when there are no stress marks whatsoever?

I would like to post a question to the experts around here, was it robofreak who has some chemistry background and iirc, Mrs. Counterpunch is a chemist.

So, uhhhm, Counterpunch, if you manage to read this post, is it possible to ask your better half on any potential fixes? Or something to delay the deterioration?

This is btw for the 2002 Godginrai Takara release.

Gosh, that's tragic. I've played with some of my G! (transformed the dinobots the other day) and never had trouble with them.

What kind of temperature differentials do your toys experience during the year?

I just opened one of my 3 MISB Jetfires last week (and to those of you that think your die-cast is better than everything) and all i went to do was pop out the landing gear to display him in jet mode, but 2 of the 3 landing gear crumbled upon hitting the switch. what a bummer. and to those of you that think die cast is so great, after about 5 or 6 years it starts to become brittle, it is not something that lasts.

The same thing happened to my G1 Gears a few years ago don'tchaknow. Snapped his entire leg off somehow. I applied some super glue and, so far, it's been holding up quite well and doesn't affect the alt mode or transformation. A temporary fix I suppose, but I don't touch him that much anymore.

More or less the plastic mounting for the landing gear gave way. Iirc, based on my Macross Valkyrie, the landing gear is a spring mounted mechanism, hence all the more stress on the frame.

I'm assuming that Viometrix lives in a much temperate region and that still happens :BANG_HEAD:

I shudder to think how long the latest TF releases will last.

Godginrai? Isn't that PM Optimus Prime? If so, BBTS has him: http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/prod ... ode=retail

Biggest problem climate wise for plastic is humid places. Doesn't matter what the temperatures are but moisture (and I guess moisture comes with a hot climate too) is just going to kill the shelf life of many things. Not entirely sure what polymer is in the plastic in the 80's, but hey, these suckers were made 30 years ago.... I guess degradation is bound to happen but having a collection that is close to the coast is not going to help the process :(

Perfect example of the above is some of the complaints on the rubbery plastic used in Transformers Animated figures, where I've heard reports from collectors in coastal areas where the plastic is sort of 'melting' or just the polymer altogether transforming into something else. Then there's my Animated collection, I live in the dry Canadian prairies and the same Animated figures are fine.

I honestly can't think of anything except moving to another location to prevent this at the moment... I'll try to do some research on it.

@ Viometrix

the metal part crumbled? WTF? That sucks!

@ Sentinel A

Lucky for me, that one was available. Already got one. Thanks! ;)

@ Blurrz

You're the chemist!( sorry for mixing you up with robofreak) Thanks for the effort appreciate it the most. And yes, it does suck to live in the tropics. Btw, my Godginrai was the re-issue circa 2002 (it is marked made in Japan)

a few years ago, I won a large lot of MIB and MISB figures. One of them was a MIB Omega Supreme. I kept him in the box for about 2-3 years and then I finally decided to bring him out and transform him. Same thing happened to me, I snapped a large part of him off (I can't recall which one anymore) I sold off the rest of the pieces and cursed a lot.

I live in Florida too and the only toy woes I have (besides stress marks in shoddy plastic) are GPS related. None of the the Jetfires I've gotten have broken either. Mine are junkers too so they have been manhandled. I still don't have one to display. I don't have humidity issues in my home. It's usually between 74-80 degrees inside. I don't expose them to naked UV light. I don't open the windows for air either unless it's winter time with little to no humidity. Sorry for you losses guys. God Ginrai/PMOP is probably my favorite Transformer ever.

I didn't think that was possible.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does SEA stand for? I assume you don't mean you live out in the ocean.

Anyway, yeah broken G1, I have my share, but the ones I have broke back when G1 was the only G there was. I don't recall breaking any of them since then. But if one did, wow that would be heartbreaking.

The diecast on GoBots from the 80's is really brittle too. I know, not G1, but close enough!

SEA: I read that acronym as South East Asia.

A few thousand miles to the south west ma'am. I'm presently assigned in South East Asia (I'm in the rescue/health care sector)

I had a similar experience with my God Ginrai with disassemble of Ginrai off of Prime's trailer feet. The hooking plastic part of snapped on the trailer. I was packing up my collection for a move and my G1 Megatron's gun barrel came off while i was moving it into position for pistol mode..... :-x

Totally know what it is like.

Funny sidenote. As I was rearranging some stuff I accidentally knocked over and broke the waist piece on Universe Superion. They're G1 Micromaster combiner repaints. I replaced it and while reassembling the first limb, a piece of gold plastic went flying off. I had to laugh to keep from getting angry about it. Haha. it holds for now but I'll have to replace it again, eventually.
