What should Megatron’s alt mode be?

What should Megatron’s alt mode be?

If it were 1984, and you could choose any Megatron toy from 1984-today, to be the toy and to be in the cartoon/comic, what alt mode would you choose for Megatron?

The G1 gun Megatron in the cartoon was epic. He had a great presence and smooth and menacing look. The G1 gun Megatron look will forever be classic, for its excellent look and since it was the first Megatron. But as a transformer, it always seemed limited and impractical to me. The leader shouldn’t have to depend on others for his alt mode. Since he does he is mostly limited to being in robot mode most of the time. The G2 Megatron tank mode is intimidating and devastating. The WFC Megatron toy is awesome. But Megatron as a tank also seems limited. He should be able to keep up with and lead Decepticon jets. He doesn’t have to be the fastest, but he should be able to travel and lead them into battle. The 07 movie and PRID jet mode is powerful and smooth.

FOC Shockwave was a good solution - mobile artillery - half plane half gun. Or, maybe he is a flying cannon. Kind of like a Warthog, a plane built around a giant gun. I suppose that is what PRID Megatron is, a jet and a big cannon. It doesn’t have the impact of G1 Megatron, but if I could redo it I would choose PRID Megatron. I would love G1 Megatron cartoon robot or a WFC Voyager sized Megatron to transform into something like PRID Megatron vehicle mode. Side note: I love Transmetal BW Megatrons, T-Rex and dragon. If I had to choose just one toy then I would choose PRID Megatron as my 84 Megatron.

A tank that looks like it was made out of some sort of heavy-duty mining/earthmoving vehicle. It gives him character and adds some extra dimensions with flying cons wanting to usurp him.

A tank. If you can't make him a gun, then a tank is the next best thing. It's basically a giant gun on wheels (treads).

I like that Megatron has a jet mode in Prime, but would prefer a tank as well.

Tank. The idea of a two-story robot shrinking into a handgun just seems unrealistic.

Why not make him a triple changer and have both a tank and a flight mode

In G1, didn't Shockwave being a gun can fire himself but Megatron always had to depend on others to trigger the fire? :-(

This is a tough choice. I like the concept in ROTF that Megatron can either be a tank or a jet. That means, Blitzwing? Yeah, something like Blitzwing but the main gun is on his right arm. Not on his shoulder, chest, or back.

You guys are right! That answer seems so obvious, I didn't even think about it this time around. Nice job njb002 for saying it first in this forum. Pryme, thank you for posting that picture! I have it saved on another computer and I completely forgot about it! Will you remind me of the series that prototype was for. Change the face plate, or at least have it be able to slide down, and yes that should be Megatron. Tank or flight mode. BTW, ROTF Megatron doesn't count, that was a poorly proportioned robot with a square block of a tank (I like rectangular tanks) with tiny wings, it was a bad tank, a bad robot, and a bad flight mode, the idea was there but it was not executed well.

Transformers Animated

What would've been the fourth season. :-(

You’re asking me about ROTF Megatron, right? Okay, that is a fair question, and you are right, I was too harsh on that mold, the leader and voyager do have some things going for them (which transformer doesn’t have any issue, right?). I have the voyager and it frustrates me. It has some pretty cool aspects. But the left arm is oddly small. I know Megatron carries a giant cannon, and his right arm could be bigger but his left arm is disproportionately small. Then his legs are too big. Sure a tank should have big legs but again they are too big compared to the rest of him and his knees and feet are odd. In tank mode his cannon looks small, not intimidating at all. It isn’t too bad, but its flaws are distracting.

I don’t own leader class, but that one looks pretty good. The tank mode is real nice. Almost everything on him looks good, except the left arm, again a bit distracting. In the movie I liked that he could fly but it wasn’t too convincing since he was so bulky and had little wings.

So I retract my comments that the mold is bad. But I stand by the other points that he is not a good triple changer, he does not have a satisfactory flying mode, he has significant issues, and he can not be the one and only Megatron (I do enjoy different versions of toys, but I want a definitive Megatron).

Oh, I apparently didn't read your post with the initial pictures too closely.

Megatron has taken a lot of alt modes in his career. Let's see:

1) Firearm (G1)
2) Tank (G2)
3) Car (G2)
4) T-Rex (Beast Wars)
5) Aircraft/Spacecraft (Energon)

I know! Put it all into one figure and call him Six Shot Megatron

I'd know some of us would PREFER to forget the recent movies, but...

6) Tanker truck (DOTM)

also...

7) Alligator (BW)
8.) Dragon (BM)
9) Spider tank/giant head (RiD)

Let us also not forget...

10) Construction Loader (Armada)

I'd mention all of the times he was a Helicopter, but I supposed that fits in with "Aircraft/Spacecraft"

Fine, I'll say it if no one else will. DoTM Megatron's truck mode was bad ass. It was huge, projected power and dominance, and it looked menacing, with all the rust and dirt and patched-on parts. In robot mode he looked the same way, and feminazis might chide me for this, but that shotgun just made him more masculine. Also, he finally seemed to be a fitting counterpart to Optimus. Too bad that as with most other characters, Bay and the writers served him total injustice. Not getting him a Leader Class figure is 1 of HasTak's greatest screw-ups in the nearly 30-year history of Transformers. And that's saying a LOT. I was sorely tempted to buy that oversized KO last year, but it was just too much. Now I can't even find it.

Having said that, I grew up with G1 and G2 (the comics mainly) and G2 Tank Megatron always left an indelible impression on me. So I would have to say that for me it's a tie between those 2. I just can't choose. They both have their pros and cons, and it's a total dead-heat between those 2 for best alt mode.

I love Transformers Prime Megatron. He has become the definitive version of Megatron for me. Not so much in aesthetic, but the way his character is portrayed. You fully understand why he is the leader of the Decepticons. They've really done an amazing job of taking all the points that made the character so good and emphasizing them. Even Frank Welker's voice acting for Megatron has improved, and without losing the recognizable aspects of Megatron's voice. They is no doubt that this is Megatron. He is a perfect update. And I feel the same way about TP Optimus Prime.
As for his jet mode, I really like him as a Cybertronian jet. The fact that he doesn't have an earth based vehicle mode says a lot about his character. And I think he has utilized his jet mode in battle better than any other character in the show. He is like a juggernaut. His gun mode is by far the most iconic, and I will always love it. But if I had to choose an alternative alt mode for him, I would have to go with a mode similar to Transformers Prime which is a jet crossed with a tank. I just makes him that much more imposing.
