Giving Up - TFSource Article

It’s a depressing subject, giving up toy collecting, but it’s one that many have considered from time to time and even acted upon. One might be driven to the brink of surrender by finances, space, obsession, disinterest, priorities or a feeling of being overwhelmed. It can lead to feelings of liberation, or pangs of regret. As intensely personal as the collection itself, the reason to quit collecting depends on the person, the way in which that collection was built and maintained, and their circumstances or stage in life.

This makes me realise I've done a good job of keeping my collecting in check. It definitely helped that when I resumed collecting I had a very limited budget (the pennies left over from weekly grocery shopping at one point!) and had to research and choose carefully, never wasting money on repaints.

The toys are more fun than their boxes.

Those photos are a little scary. :)

Personally, I don't collect or display; I buy a handful of Transformers when there's something I really like (Masterpiece!) and every new robot is exciting.

I can't relate to the habit of buying so many Transformers that you don't even remember which ones you have, or that you ordered them in the first place. And the idea of buying 2 of the same figure is ironic to me -- doesn't that defeat the purpose of a transforming toy? I mean, aren't you basically buying an Action Master and a car model?

Wow. That article is a lot.

I've never considered selling off the whole collection. I have considered selling of some things. They used to fit into my collection rules, but as life moves on, I've realized that they don't interest me as much as they did before. Due to lack of space I sometimes feel that I would rather have the space than some of the figures. Heck, I even packed up a bunch of figures to sell at a vintage toy store. The offer was low so I took them home. And now they are back on display.

I spend a LOT on toys and I'll never sell any of them. I can relate to the space concerns though. I'm working on clearing stuff out of my living room (boxes of clothes that no longer fit me mostly :P) to put up more shelves. I live alone and the only room in my 2 bedroom apartment that I spend any time in is my bedroom, so the rest of the place will eventually be filled with shelves full of toys (except the kitchen and bathroom of course ;)).

Maz, as a side note, my friend from the UK now has me collecting some Diaclone stuff. He showed me one of the toys he's got and I went nuts. The things I'm after are bots and vehicles that were never released in any form under the standard US Transformers banner. Things like Multi Force 14, the DIA-Train and the Cosmo Roller.

I've got my eye on a few (very few) of the pre-TF versions of some of the G1 stuff, but only particular ones that I like the pre-TF colors of better. I did already break down and finally shell out the $ for a DIA Magnus reissue just because I LOVE that blue, red and gray color scheme on Magnus.

i finally sold my entire g1, beast wars, beast machines, energon, alternators- well basically over 2000 figures... got a dollar amount i wont disclose, but it would take days to count that high. i am keeping my masterpieces and a few select figures, and will only buy masterpieces and other iconic figures (they have to look great too). i do though feel a sense of loss as i remove some of my now empty shelving.

Hehe, yeah, I know. I also snagged one of these just because he's in Prime colors, kinda looks like Cy-Kill (Gobots) and also reminds me in not so subtle a way of the bots shown when Optimus and Rodimus made their voyages into Vector Sigma and saw images of bots/leaders past. He's going on my shelf next to MP-10 to represent a sort of predecessor (though not Orion Pax, obviously).

Last year I sold off about 90% of my collection, (I needed the money), but I'm happier with my much smaller collection. I am buying a lot fewer now, and unlike before just the ones I want not the ones I feel I "need". The only one I regret selling is my Universe Drench, sigh.
