How'd that get there?

Forgive me if this is a topic that already exists, but I was just having a good long stare at my insubstantial shelf unit that just barely squeezes in my primarily classics-centric TF collection... and I took note of a few things that seemed quite odd.

To make the point clear, there are a few items I have in my collection that I stare at in confusion and ask myself the question of the subject title. Not quite so much having something misplaced as not remembering I ever had it or never having wanted. It got me curious as to whether or not I'm alone in this regard.

A few personal examples are as follows:
Image
GDO Swerve. I can only guess that it was the character's appearance in MTMTE comics that even drew my eye to this purchase at all, but even so I can't imagine what I ever saw in this repaint of the Kup mold that would really satisfy that itch. Especially now with the upcoming release of Legends Swerve.
Image
HFTD Terradive. As a general rule I tend to stray away from Movie figures unless they adequately fill a certain void in my Classics collection, so to have this guy is just... mind-boggling. I mean it's not all too bad in it's own right and I like the alt mode, but I can't imagine what in the world was on my mind when I got it.
Image
Animated Grimlock. Another rule of mine is unless a new series feels like something I can really get in to I'll typically just get the usual four and be done with it, and even as much as I liked Animated the aesthetic in toy form just didn't grasp me. So I stuck to the usual plan... and ended up with more than that anyway, because there were just some figs that were just a bit too good to resist. Despite all that I still wonder... what the crap drove me to getting Grimlock?!

At the end of the day I blame my brother since we pretty much share a collection and any oddballs I find stacked on the shelf I can usually blame on him, even if they weren't actually his fault :HEADHURTS:

But really, has anyone else had a conundrum like these?

This guy:

Don't get me wrong; he's a great fig, but since I already have MP-10 and use that as the definitive OP for all my neo-G1 figs, a deluxe-sized OP fig just doesn't fit into my collection anywhere.

There are several more, but I can't recall which. Pretty sure FE Arcee is among them; again, nice fig, but pretty much a standalone display as I don't collect TFP figs much.

Looking at my collection, all of my Movie and Animated stuff could go. I often look at that shelf and say "what was I thinking?"

Those are three great figures!

I'm currently getting ready to unload most of my Movie collection. In hindsight, most of them weren't worth purchasing. But I know "how they got there". It was the 2007 movie that renewed my interest in TFs and sparked my interest in collecting them, and for a few years most of the TFs on store shelves were Movie figures. So I bought a lot of them.

Now that I've got a sizable collection of Classics and G1 reissues and I realize how much more satisfying they are to collect and display, I have very little interest in the Movieverse figures.

Same here, I originally planned to get G1 Prime, Megs, Bumblebee, Starscream, Jazz and Soundwave. then replicate them with Classics and Movie equivilents, suffice to say the Classics(CHUG)figures wer so much more fun I abandoned the other two lines quite quickly. The kids now have my Movieverse figures.

Most of my 'how did that get there?' figures are either superfluous figures that I had to get in order to get the figures I want, i.e. when BBTS only offers that fig as part of a 4 pack. The other way is when I see a non-Generations figure and think 'hey, that looks neat' and that's how I ended up with figures like Hailstorm Terradive and an unknown amount of Movie-related scout figures.

There are some I don't regret, such as Tomahawk, Terradive and Skyhammer. I do regret many of the scout-sized Human Alliance figs and movie scouts though.

To this day I don't know why I bought most of the 6-inch Titanium figures I own. And although a lot of the movie lines I like, a lot of them could disappear and I'd never miss them.

A large portion of my collection is that. Particularly my Movie shelf.

This comes down to two factors.

1. I'll buy a figure I want, then look at that shelf and think I need other ones for completeness sake. This is why I suddenly had the need to bulk up my Movie shelf with a lot of figures. It made sense at the time, not so much now.

2. I just want a new figure. Now there may be a specific one I want, but just isn't available, so I settle for I that I sorta like, but probably would've left behind if my first choice was there.

I'm never surprised by a figure in my collection. I distinctly remember buying every one, because I usually went back and forth and weighed my options and at some point finally gave in. However, I'm sure at some point there will be a massive unloading of toys in my future.

I'm guessing HFTD Terradive was bought for a similar reason as I got him: He killed a dude with a trident. He's the Brick Tambland of Decepticons.

I have tons of the original Beast Wars figures that I can't remember why I bought them. Sure, I know why I got the characters from the show, I loved watching it, but why the heck was I buying Iguanus and Armordillo? Was I just trying to "catch 'em all"?

I also bought the three brothers from RID, and I hated that series. I think I just needed to feed my toy fix after the Beast era ended and that's all there was at the time.

That Grimlock would have been more better had they ditched the stupid chin.

I wouldn't know that since I avoid the all movie related fiction like the plague that it is. Like I said, I only buy Moive figs if they adequately fill a void in my Classics collection, such as Bludgeon, Mindwipe(who I was waiting on Headrobots to do their magic to before they disappeared), Hubcap(who wears G2 style Reprolabels), and even Terradive's repaint Space Case. Terradive himself is just an oddball with no classic equal that I can think of to justify having him.

The chin isn't a problem with me so much as the weak arms, weak torso slider, and the fact that he should be a good size class or two bigger. With all that in mind and the fact that he's the last Animated figure I picked up, I can't for the life of me figure out why the hell I even bothered.

When there's life, there's hope. Me too. Why the heck did I pick that one up. :HEADHURTS:

I bought a few of those when they were out because they were the best representation of the character at the time. I was looking for updated G1 figures. Soundwave was was there for a while, Rodimus Prime was there until I got the Protector armor, and Hotspot was good until the GDO version came out. Sure they weren't the best figures, but they were ok until something better came along. At the time didn't know if something better would come along.

I have a literal tub of Energon and Cybertron figures at the parents house that makes me ask this question each time I stop over. So glad I bought a house. Made me way more fickle in what I pick up.
