Soundwave: need a proper chug!

theres still characters we need for our chug (not a fan of that term btw..) collections. and weve actually had a bunch of soundwaves... but in my opinion none of them fit...

cybertron/galaxy force soundwave:
Image
the GF soundwave and soundblaster have some nice paint jobs and come with my favorite versions of lazerbeak/buzzsaw. sculpting is very nice also, but its almost too sharp to fit with generations aethetics. which i could look past, but he's just to tall. his alt mode doesnt bother me, he cant be a cassette player forever.
bah! so close!

device label soundwave:
Image
he would be perfect! right size, right alt mode! but the sculpt has almost no detail.. hes so flat! i have seen him livened up with reprolabels, but... stickers? theyve had their time. i want sculpting and paint apps dammit!

FOC deluxe soundwave:
Image
really nice. especially the paint job on the takara version. but i believe he mostly belongs with other FOC figures.

FOC voyager soundwave:
Image
same reasons as the deluxe mostly. but also he is way bigger than he needs to be (im sure to accommodate the data discs). and i applaud the attempt at the discs, but they unfortunatly fall short.

BTS sonicron:
Image
i dont even really want to include this one... but i guess its necessary for this list. after researching him i found he was riddled with QC problems, and i personally dont care for his proportions. one could do worse though... hes still available and at discount prices. but i wouldnt bite.

KFC mugen vox:
Image
i left him for last because he's probably the best fit of the bunch. hes the right size, decent sculpting, decent paint apps. and aethetics fit in well enough to other generations figures. its a shame hes merely a perceptor retool but the tank mode isnt bad. i know there isnt a lot of love for KFC which i understand, already owning some of their cassettes and seeing their quality first hand. but from reviews im led to believe mugen vox holds his own. and poorish quality or not, i want his counterpart ratbat, he looks great.

for the record i own all of the figures listed aside from sonicron and mugen vox, and im sort of looking for that extra "push" to finally pull the trigger on vox. i just dont want to spend 90 bucks on something that still wont feel right for my collection...

I'd go with FOC Voyager.

yeah i'm using the FOC Soundwave, and the MP Cassettes. The cassettes are perfect for Classics, but I would like a better SW.

Stick with the G1. Its a decent size and although it lacks some articulation, its not really that bad on the whole. Plus its an almost perfect representation of his iconic image.

see... i plan to display all my FOC's together. after some pic hunting i finally found a voyager SW next to a classics megatron which only confirmed hes too big.

and the MP cassettes belong to the MP display. besides im not worried about his minions. ive already got them lined up:

galaxy force laserbeak and buzzsaw
united rumble and frenzy
device label jaguar (ravage)
BTS nightfang (though id replace him with KFC)

i own all those already, as for overkill and slugfest ill probably get KFC's renditions.

also a good call. I had my G1 reissue standing in with my Classics and he looked fine.

I've got FoC Voyager with my Classics, with Classics Ravage + Renderform missiles and the PE Minions. I prefer to keep my WfC/FoC shelf as Deluxe pure.

Sonicron, Device Label, BH, Cybertron, G1, Reissue, MP, and soon Mugen Vox(and more!) all go on my Soundwave shrineshelf.

Then for the love of Primus, stop using the term! :P

More seriously, I'm using FOC Voyager Soundwave for my Classics (or neo-G1) display. The IDW books have used this look for his current G1 appearance, so don't feel guilty. Furthermore, I consider it the first real Soundwave "update" that includes his original play pattern (the cassette minions). And, if you are upset the Voyager mold being too big, the Generations Deluxe version from a few years ago works well too. Also, I use the Blaster remold/repaint as my Classics Blaster, for similar reasons. If you want some G1 toy accuracy in terms of scale, Voyager Blaster with Deluxe Soundwave look great together! :)

This character and his subsequent minions have been redone to death in the past few years, that I'm honestly tired of the concept. If they aren't going to do it 'right' for some collectors, then they should just move on.

neo G1 sounds better...
my blaster is actually device label. he looks good, isnt to big, holds cassettes, and his modern updated alt mode is plausible. makes me wish there was a soundwave that turned into a cell phone or ipod/iphone.

but i think people should seriously consider device label jaguar as their ravage. hes the best looking and most posable ravage out there. theres a lot of KO's out there you can slap a reprolabel insignia on.

but i bought one from chimung (cheap!) and i honeslty dont know where it comes from. though it looks and feels legit.

I too think Music Label SW is the best Neo G1 representation there is currently. And as pointed out he is awesome next to Voyager Blaster and I do recommend the Takara version a must! They both capture their respective G1 figures in almost perfect scale.

I would so get Devise Label Ravage especially with his obvious articulation but without any weapons or ablility to add weapons it's a flaw. It would be like having Soundwave (from any line almost) without his signature shoulder mounted weapon...it just ain't right. But anyway lots of luck to you and your choice. You should let us know what you decide on. :VEHI:

Mugan Vox's alt mode looks like a folded robot. I only have Music Label Soundwave and he does the job for me.

i think that mold is a little strange. as perceptor, yes the microscope mode looks forced. and the tank mode just doesnt fit in my opinion. as soundwave you can ignore the microscope mode entirely, but the tank mode looks better due to the different turret/cannon. i think it decently pulls off the tank mode.

and back to device label ravage/jaguar, you can fit guns/missiles in his front legs if you really want. but i think its even worth a little kitbashing if you want those missiles in his hind legs. ive been thinking of trying it.

This. I have Soundwave, Soundblaster and SG Soundwave of this Device Label and it works pretty well in my eyes.

I got a KO version of Music Label Ravage, and it's pretty crappy. I don't even display it; I just use it as a storage device. If you're thinking of getting one for your CHUG display, I'd encourage you to either track down an original, or find out which KO is the best quality.

the one i have pictured is most likely a KO, and hes solid. dead ringer for the real thing.

Music label with repolabels works well with classics seekers. G1 soundwave works well with Henkei, United Megatron or Hegemon. I use either or depending on who I stand him next to on the shelves.

I'll most likely be using Music Label Soundwave for my "Classics" Soundwave, as Classics is supposed to be about updates, and updating Soundwave to an MP3 Player fits the bill. The Sonic White one was repurposed as SG Soundwave by the way, so there's that.
As for his cassettes, we got Universe Overkill, GDO Laserbeak, and United Rumble & Frenzy. Now, where's Buzz Saw...

I agree that's what Classics is about, which is why ML Soundwave doesn't work for me. He's not enough of an update. Sure it's cool he's an MP3 player(that works, no less!), but stylistically, he looks too G1 for me(and I find his articulation and long shins lacking).

Before I get jumped on for that: I prefer Classics to evoke G1 aesthetics in such a way that someone will recognize the character but isn't so slavish that it's essentially the G1 figure with new articulation or the cartoon model as a figure. It's also why I prefer the United version of the Classics mold Megatron over something like Hegemon(who I find too tall for my purposes as well).

see thats why cybertron/GF lazerbeak is the best! LB and BS should be the same mold, and with GF soundblaster you can have a matching pair of birds!

GDO laserbeak belongs on the arm of a voyager FOC soundwave. which makes me suddenly realize i now need a voyager FOC soundwave...

universe overkill is nice, but to big. which id be willing to overlook if there was a slugfest counterpart the same size... which is why ill probably go with KFC for that pair.

Why do you want to liquefy Soundwave, put him in a beer mug, and try to shove him down your throat as quickly as possible?

Oh... sorry... not what you meant by "chug." (Personally, I still just use the term "Classics.")

Anyway, you may have a bias against stickers, but I shall join with those who have said that Music Label Soundwave is an excellent fit in with a Classics collection, especially with the Reprolabels added. They really make him look fabulous! And he scales pretty perfectly with Classics Seekers.

impressive display! i have all those chms seekers too (they rock!). if i could make one suggestion: get the united gun megatron. he's spot on for G1 colors, even better than henkei (ive had all three).

and DL soundwave does look fetching with reprolabels. especially soundblaster..

Eh... I'll agree that the United and Henkei versions have better colours... but I'm content enough with my Classics Megatron that I'm not worried about trying to replace him. (Unless someone wants to send me a United Megatron as a gift... But I shan't hold my breath. )

Normally I avoid bootlegs like the plague, and can be quite vocal about opposing them. But CHMS the generics, Sunstorm, and Rainmakers were my one voyage into hypocrisy.

Your display reminds me that I need to get the rest of the CHMS Rainmakers and a couple Air Warriors.
